I'll never forget the morning my first grandchild was born. I was in the room and got to see this miracle--it is something I will never forget. It was fairly quick--Shayna had been up most of the night with light, but apparent, contractions. By 7 am she had show. The day before, on Monday, she had had a Dr. appointment and he told her she was 50% effaced and dilated to 4 cm--he told her that a membrane rupture was imminent. Shayna, Casey, and I got to the hospital at around 8:30 am--they went on to L & D while I registered her. By the time I got to L & D she was settled in--still at 4 cm but 65%+ effaced. She was given an epidural (scary things--but I was amazed at how she never had pain after the procedure--I most certainly didn't laugh and giggle during any part of my labor!) She was put on IV pitocin to help her labor along. At 11 am the nurse checked her and broke her water. At this time she was 100% effaced and at 7 cm.

Stacy was there by then and I sent her in search of Casey, who was taking a smoke, because birth was near--and it was--20 minutes later the doctor was there and she was pushing--after being at the hospital only about 3 hours! Wow--seemed relatively easy compared to almost every birth I have ever known about. There were no problems, no complications, nothing--smooth as silk. At 6 lbs, 3 oz, 19 inches, my grandson came into this world mad as hell and letting everyone know about it! No doubt in any one's mind that his lungs were fully functional. No doubt about his gender either--Casey grinned from ear to ear to finally see that indeed his baby was a boy child!

I took some pictures of the staff cleaning up the baby and of the new parents. The staff cleaned up the room and then we were left to bond with the newest member of our family. I watched as Shayna held the baby, Casey gazing dreamily at the both of them. I don't think I've ever seen my daughter glow the way she was glowing at that moment! Casey then held the baby. Casey's mother then held the little one. I thought that was fair since I got to be there for the birth and she didn't. Then it was my turn!

He was gorgeous. Perfect in every way. I was now a Grandmother and holding that baby was just as intense, but different, as it was when I held my own children for the first time. I can only explain it as a deep maternal love for your offspring that really can't be explained if you have never experienced it. It was truly one of the highlights of my life.

After a bit it was time to make my exit and let this new family of 3 have their time together. I wish them all happy, productive, loving lives!
