This is my first Margaret Miles book. The story is set in 1766 in the colonies. Young Widow Charlotte Willet goes skating and after falling into the river, takes refuge at a manor house on Boar Island. The old house, where 2 ladies live, is the subject of ghost stories. Soon after her chance encounter with the ladies, the young man who performs chores for them is found dead. So begins a tale of twists. I think the average reader will enjoy this book. I am awaiting the second book.
This book takes place before the Revolutionary war and does an excellent job portraying how life was right down to details about the furniture. I liked that aspect of it. The murder wasn't so sensational and the victim is really dislikable so it's hard to really care about the character. Overall, a good pleasant cozier read.
January 1766. A colonial New England village is hanted by deception and murder.
