I loved this book! Although a light read and very funny, the characters were strongly drawn, and I could practically visualize them. There are some witty "home truths," a thoroughly southern viewpoint, and engaging characters. I'm so pleased that Miss Julia is not a one book wonder, but appears again and again! I'm looking forward to them all.

I'd give this book six stars if possible, it was a joy to read, can't believe I never caught this series until now.

Miss Julia, a recently bereaved and newly wealthy widow, is only slightly bemused when one Hazel Marie Puckett appears at her door with a youngster in tow and unceremoniously announces that the child is the bastard son of Miss Julia's late husband. Suddenly, this longtime church member and pillar of her small Southern community finds herself in the center of an unseemly scandal-and the guardian of a wan nine-year-old whose mere presence turns her life upside down.

With razor-sharp wit and perfect "Steel Magnolia" poise, Miss Julia speaks her mind indeed-about a robbery, a kidnapping, and the other disgraceful events precipitated by her husband's death. Fast-paced and charming, with a sure sense of comic drama, a cast of crazy characters, and a strong Southern cadence, Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind will delight readers from first page to last.

This book is a rather poignant, funny, entertaining book about a elderly southern lady and how her life has to change because of her husband's death. There are surprises, good and bad, for Miss Julia.

The book is written well, but it takes some imagination to think that someone in this day and age would be as naive as Miss Julia.

I read the first two books in the series and won't read any more since they are predictable. After reading just a bit of the second book, the plot, characters and outcome are pretty obvious. While there are some surprises, there aren't enough for this reader to follow the series any further.

Miss Julia Springer is an older, slightly blue-haired Southern lady of very proper upbringing; a life-long, faithful member of the Presbyterian church. She lives alone - a recent widow - in her big, beautiful house in Hendersonville, North Carolina, directly across the street from the church she and her husband have attended for years. Her husband, Wesley Lloyd Springer, was a savvy business man, who worked and took care of all their financial affairs while she stayed home & and attended abundant Bible studies and church functions and meetings, and basked in the righteous light that she and her husband had always occupied in the community. Her husband had made all the decisions in the marriage, and in fact, was an Elder and very important advisor to the church's patriarch and fearless leader, Pastor Ledbetter. Wesley Lloyd had pulled in the driveway coming home from work one night, when he went and had a heart attack that took him to the Lord before he could even get out of his car. Miss Julia knew they were financially comfortable, but she had never realized just how comfortable until after his death. He had always been very frugal, even to the point of not getting air conditioning put in their old house, because he said it was a waste of money, and besides, fresh air was good for them. (Of course, the office he went to every day was air conditioned.) He had also doled our a weekly allowance to her her, saying, âNow, make it last, Julia. Money doesn't grow on trees, you know.' But to her surprise and delight, she now discovers that he has left his wife with millions. Miss Julia was never blessed with children, but she feels pretty content and at peace, knowing that she will now spend the rest of her years getting a little remodeling done on her home, ordering things she wants out of catalogs, and being very active in her church - UNTIL, one day someone drops something off at her doorstep that turned her entire world totally upside down. Absolute chaos ensues.

This was a delightful book. I was at first very put out with this uppity, self-righteous, insensitive, pompous, (and by my standards, very weak) woman, but then I quickly recognized the predictability that she would eventually redeem herself. I don't think this is a spoiler, because I think anyone reading the book would have quickly come to the same prediction. As soon as I realized that, I wondered if the book would then become boring, but for me, it never did. I laughed out loud several times throughout the story, and at times, couldn't put the book down because I needed to know what happened next. In addition to being hilarious, it is a lesson in how to become a better human and a wonderfully satirical kick-in-the-butt to crooked evangelists and the historical oppression of women.

Miss Julia is a recently bereaved widow discovering her personal freedom after years of marriage to a dominating Southern gentleman. She soon learns that her husband left a few surprises besides his financial wealth. You will enjoy how she outwits her neighbors and the church going community some who think that she is an easy target and have their own plans for her inheritance. This is the first book in a series and I enjoyed getting to know the crazy comic characters. I am looking froward to the arrival of book # 2 from PBS.

An upstanding member of the community suddenly finds that her recently deceased husband was not all that she thought he was. He has left her an ex-girlfriend, a step-son and a mystery surrounding his estate.

My 90 year old mother loved this book and she is reading the rest of the series.

Myself, I found the book to be silly and slow, but to each his own.

Charming comedic novel of widow living in North Carolina adjusting to revelations about deceased husband. Events pile one on top of the other as she handles things for the first time all by herself. Multiple characters introduced in colorful detail. Reads very quickly yet packs a punch of positivity. I enjoyed this 1st in the series. Is a classic example of spunky southern women in a small town dealing with life.

Loved the feistiness of Miss Julia from the get-go! In general I liked the book, but did think the plot went a bit over the top in the second half. Glad I read it, but hesitate to read the series as I fear the characters will start to seem silly and superficial. Nevertheless, a fun read.

Miss Julia is a proper Southern lady, and a recent widow who came out of a proper marriage to a staid and proper gentleman. Little does she know that the dull husband she thought she knew had a secret. That is, until the day a woman leaves a nine year old boy on her doorstep who looks a whole lot like her late husband!
This book is a whole lot of laughs, with gossipy neighbors, a conniving preacher, a kindly lawyer, and a woman who isn't going to take pity from ANYONE. Read this and meet Miss Julia, a lady with a backbone of steel, and a surprisingly kindly heart.

Loved the whole series to date. Miss Julia as a widow becomes her own person for the first time in her over-60 life (exact age never clear - as befitting a Southern gentlewoman). But she has plenty of ideas on how to run her own life and those of several other people!! Her values are challenged on several issues but she deals with them all and more! Miss Julia Speaks Her Mind is the first of the Miss Julia series. This amusing book introduces you to the newly widowed Miss Julia Springer. Suddenly a woman named Hazel Marie shows up on her door step with a boy claiming the child is the late Mr. Springer's son. The money hungry preacher from Miss Julia's church and a televangelist who is Hazel Marie's uncle is after the late Mr. Springer's money. Between trying to protect the boy and his money, Miss Julia has to deal with the infidelity that her husband has been participating in for years.

This book should be read first because it explains the characters in the book. It will help you understand what is going on in the rest of the series.

From Publishers Weekly: "Charming Southern eccentrics breathe life into a predictable story of a proper Presbyterian wife ("Miss Julia") who finds her true self after the sudden death of her husband of 44 years, wealthy but parsimonious banker Wesley Lloyd Springer. Julia is becoming accustomed to the role of rich widow when another shock intrudes: Hazel Marie Puckett appears on the front porch wearing "heels too high, a dress too short, and hair too yellow," with a nine-year-old boy in tow whose "eyes were so much like Wesley Lloyd's it was like looking at her husband before she ever met him." Hazel Marie is on her way to beauty school in Raleigh, N.C., since Wesley senior left no provision for her support, and Miss Julia realizes that she must take her husband's "last legacy" into her home. Meanwhile, her inheritance attracts a variety of small-town opportunists, beginning with Pastor Ledbetter, who insinuates that her departed husband planned to leave his money to the church, then enlists the aid of "Christian psychologist" Dr. Fred Fowler to prove Miss Julia's incompetence in a court of law. Ross's characters resist their stereotypical outlinesAMiss Julia's black maid, Lillian, might talk like a character from Gone with the Wind, but she provides the strategy for retrieving Little Lloyd Jr. when he's abducted by Hazel Marie's shifty uncle, Brother Vern, a televangelist who also has designs on Miss Julia's money. Miss Julia's luck turns when, ransacking the pantry for Lillian's cache of Oreos, she comes across a Winn-Dixie sack secreted by Little Lloyd, which contains a new will and testament from the dead Lloyd Sr. Along with its homespun appeal, the novel offers an interesting take on gender, race and family in the South; it's fast-paced and funny despite Ross's persistent asides to readers and reference to serious issues (the church's stance on homosexuality and abortion). In the end, Miss Julia's prim self-absorption gives way and she begins to "feel like a real person, saying what she was thinking instead of packing it down inside." First of the "Miss Julia southern mystery" series; for fans of Fannie Flagg, the WandaNell Culpepper "Trailer Park" mysteries by Jimmie Ruth Evans, and the British Ellie Quicke mysteries by Veronica Heley.

Miss Julia is just getting used to being a widow -- and a wealthy one, at that -- when a visitor comes to her door with another legacy she didn't expect: her late husband's nine-year-old son.

This is part comedy of manners, as Miss Julia, childless throughout her 47-year marriage, attempts to do the right thing for the boy while simultaneously coming to a slow boil over her husband's infidelity, part adventure romp as various claimants to the estate attempt to get their hands on the kid, and part velvet-gloved smack at that particular variety of religious belief that insists no woman is capable of managing her own affairs, all wrapped up in small-town manners as sugary and corrosive as sweet tea.

Readers who enjoy Fannie Flagg's novels will eat this one up like hot corn bread with honey.

This is a delightful, lighthearted read! Miss Julia is a strong and opinionated character who makes the reader laugh when occasionally we see ourselves in her comments and thoughts.
