Like many of Stephen King's stories, this one takes place in a small town in Maine. The day after a violent thunderstorm strikes, a strange mist spreads across the town of Bridgton. A large group of people become trapped in the Federal, the town's supermarket, when they discover numerous deadly creatures of unknown species, resembling slugs, dragon flies, lobsters, spiders, and giant squid, lurking within the mist. The theory amongst the group is that 'The Arrowhead Project,' a top-secret military experiment, caused the devastation. This story, previously published as a novella in 'Skeleton Crew,' was frightfully fantastic, the ending, uncertain, like a bad dream. I highly recommend this book, can't wait to see the movie!

This is my favorite Stephen King story so far. It had so many elements to it, it just blew my mind. Of course, you have the normal monsters that are present in any horror story, but at the same time, you have no idea what they are. This is a great example of why the unknown is scarier than the known. When you throw people into a cramped space, with no option to leave, the human psyche goes crazy. You have people who refuse to believe it (The flat-earthers) and raving religious lunatics (Mrs. Carmody). This story was about sacrifice. It was a peak into the mentality of humans. It faced you the horrible bleakness of not knowing what to do when up against the unknown. Amazing horror story. This story definitely shows why Mr. King is the king of macabre.

This book is lacking any real Stephen King quality.

First off it's important for people to understand that this story is not ment to be an actual novel and was writtten by King for inclusion in a collected edition. It was later reprinted in King's second collection of his short stories Skeleton Crew. I've read a few reviews written by people who seemed to have missed this vital point. Classic King.

I love all of his books, but this one is one of my favorites! :)
Classic Stephen King. Good Read
good read.read in a day.
Very short and fast read for Stephen King. Was quite suprised how short this book was.
I first read this story years ago when it was part of a short stories collection. This is one of my all time favorites. Awesome creep out tale! Highly recommended.
THE MIST was previously published back in the 1980's as a novella in the SKELETON CREW book of short stories. I had read it once, several years ago, but I'm glad I picked up a copy now.
This is a very quick read -- about 2 hours -- since, as I mentioned, it's a novella and not a full-length novel. But it doesn't lessen any of the spooky, creepy, weirdness, which is always a plus.
I'm highly interested in seeing the big-screen adaptation of this book, and hope it holds up to the story. I'm anxious to see the eeriness that is THE MIST in all its CGI glory!

Loved the chracters but the storyline was kinda predictable.
"The Mist", a marvelously devious novella first published in the compendium "Skeleton Crew", is one of Stephen King's finest and most go-for-the-jugular stories he's ever written. Set, of course, in Maine, the story details the aftermath of a large coastal storm which blows in a mysteriously thick, menacing fog that quickly envelopes the area. Trapped in the local grocery store, a group of locals quickly discovers that a host of unholy, unearthly creatures are waiting in the mist, and all who venture out are sure to meet their violent end. While the little book creates classic creature-feature horror scenes and ratchets up the suspense while the inhabitants of the store fight to stay alive, the worst enemies in the story are the humans themselves, who quickly devolve and regress into primal, animalistic survival mode and turn against one another. While the reader of this novella will walk away after finishing the story with a truly unsettling feeling from all the weird and terrifying creatures, the scariest conjuration is a religiously-unsettled woman named Mrs. Carmody, one of the most haunting and dangerous characters ever written. Check out the movie version, too, for a wonderfully dark and intense adaptation of King's story!
For the first time ever, I'm disappointed with a Stephen King book.
To me, this book was a lot different then anything else I read by King. Maybe because it was a novella rather then one of his normal 1,000 page tomes. There were two things that ruined this story for me. First was the lack of well defined characters. In most of his books you have 3-5 main and somewhere around 20-30 secondary characters. Normally, even his secondary characters have well defined backgrounds. That was not the case here. This story has only one real main character and a small handful of secondary ones. With this story, you were lucky if you got a paragraph or two letting you know anything about the characters. Almost none of the characters were likable in my opinion. The ones I did like were all secondary characters who were killed off.
The second thing that bothered me was the ending. It was a complete cop out.

-Horror is placed on a small town by creatures in the mist.... protection and shelter in town grocery store is the only thing to keep them safe! (Made into a movie!)
I found this book hard to put down and I just wanted to keep on reading.... Another great novel by Stephen King.

Stephen King has outdone himself on this one!
Although I have just now gotten the opportunity to read this book, I am thankful for the opportunity to read it at all. From page one, this book drew me in and captivated me in a way that I haven't wanted to put it down since. I am more than 3/4 of the way finished with it, and I can honestly say, it is one of the best books I've read in a while! I've laughed, almost cried, felt angry, anxious, and more. As always, with King's descriptive terminology and verbage, he paints a very vivid picture. I can't imagine how I would react if a situation like this were to ever really exist. GREAT book, and doesn't take long to read! I started it last night...it's 11:00 AM and I am about done with it. Definitely recommended.
