Saw the movie, could not get into the book
young women teaches art at wellsely college and challenges both students, falcuty, and their ideas about art ect.., made into a movie starring julia Roberts - book better than movie
This is a quick read that really gives the flavor of the 1950s, just after WWII, when changes were in the air---as well as resentment about those changes. It's based on the movie with Julia Roberts in the title role, and contains a sheaf of movie stills, too.
From back cover: UCLA graduate Katherine Watson has accepted a position as an art history professor at prestigious Wellesley College. The all-female institution prides itself on tradition. Katherine prides herself on change. It's 1953. This season the girls of Wellesley are going to get a lesson in life. Miss Watson has a plan -- to motivate her students to do more than measure success by how well they marry, and discover a freedom they never thought possible.
But the independent young woman is about to face a challenge of her own. Encouraging these women to strive for a more enlightened future, Katherine must stand up to the administration in order to inspire her students to look beyond the image of what is, and consider the possibilities of what could be.

When a friend gave this to me I didn't think I would like it but it turned out to be a great book keeps your interest allthe way through. I would give it four stars
Easy read. I've not seen the movie so I can't compare it to the book.
Great book, very much enjoyed it.
Novel based on the movie.
I liked it more than the movie, even though after I read it I realized that it was written after the movie was written.. lol
Not very well written (grammatical errors). Based on the movie.
Quick, easy read.
I actually had seen this movie. I believe the movie came first and then the book. It is a fun and fast read. I could picture the whole story after having seen the movie.
It gives a good idea of what life was like for women about 40 years ago. Just the beginning of consciousness raising days.
