This was my first Jack McDevitt and is *not* going to be my last!
"Moonfall" is a Scifi thriller comparable to any written by any master in the genre, with a definite nod to Niven/Pournelle's "Lucifer's Hammer." His characters are well-developed and you wind up actually being surprised when some don't make it to the end, you were so caught up in their storyline. He establishes a realistic near-future global neighborhood and projects believable and plausible new locales and modes of space transportation.
The "event" is thrilling and his words paint a viewable picture in your mind. The efforts to save the planet from the title are bandied about and make you feel like you're in the White Hoouse situation room.
The most amazing thing about the book is how well McDevitt sets all this up. You're so wrapped up in the preparation for the comet's strike during its approach, before you know it, you're more than half way done and the strike is still a day out! The disaster itself only takes about 33% of the story.
Good reading-- not just good SciFi, good for any genre.

I've always thought the event described would a make a good book. It does. The reactions of some of the people seemed somewhat unreal or maybe exaggerated. I also suspect that the destruction of the moon would be an extinction event whether any debris fell to earth or not. It was a good story and I would recommend it to anyone.

Great story, well-written with good scientific & political details.
Moonfall is an imaginative and interesting book. The concept and the story are engaging and the story is fast-paced and full of science fiction action.
I enjoyed the book, but I felt there were too many scientifically wrong situations. Primary among them is the fact that the loss of the moon would not be an earth-ending event.
Nevertheless, it is a fun read.
