I have not yet seen the book but Brooke Jarvis offers a review in The New Yorker (Buzz Off, p. 69, 8/5/2019). Mr. Winegard finds that in ancient and modern times mosquitoes caused death to those not acclimated to local mosquitoes, offering many examples. But Jarvis does caution that he does go too far in some instances with that causality.
Note that the slaves of 1619 brought a mosquito-borne disease that killed many in Virginia.
