Basically about a mother (Nell) that loses her husband in the
begining of book..how she comes to terms with the loss; her daughter
Cate-headstrong, professor who has a knack of losing her job, can't keep a
relationship and Lydia who leaves her hubby of x yrs to pursue her career, life, etc....Set in the 70's, it brings back a time when casual sex was norm and women didn't have as many choices. Thought the book was a little too lengthy, but characters were well thought out.

though not as compelling as many of Godwin's book, this one is still worth the time because she does such a good job of taking us into the interior of her characters so that we can understand what is motivating them to be the people they have become. In this case - a mother and her two grown daughters are grieving the death of their husband and father, while coming to grips with the tensions that have always been their in their own relationships with one another.
Excellent character driven story of a recently widowed women's struggle with the constant hurtful rivalry of her two adult children.
