Book opens with the death of the Mother-in-law, an oft-disliked widow with breast cancer. But did Diana take her own life? Or is something more sinister to be discovered? Chapters alternate narration between Diana and her daughter-in-law, Lucy, with a notation of 'past' or 'present'. Still sometimes it is challenging to confirm when in time an event is happening as 'past' can simply refer to before Diana's death, before her husband Tom's death a few years ago, or decades ago.

Family relationships are of prime interest with the main focus on Diana and Lucy. In parenting situations with her grandchildren, is Diana being overbearing or is she simply out of touch with the new generation's methods? Lucy struggles to remain civil to Diana due to her husband Ollie's strong attachment to his mother as the only son. Plus a family secret drives Diana's actions all these years.
The family wealth of the Goodwins also plays a big part in the family conflict. Business deals are sealed, businesses fail, 'loans' or cash gifts are sought out, and the big question remains.........who will benefit from the millions now that Diana is dead?
