I enjoyed this book very much. It is well-written with lots of humor. Some parts are rather depressing though. Narrated from the viewpoints of the different family members made for a very interesting read. The only problem I had was the voice of the child was a bit unbelievable for his age. The author is also very adept at allowing you to participate in each character's feelings and their mindset. I would recommend this book just for the unique writing style even though the subject matter of a dysfunctional family is not always enjoyable to read about.
** spoiler alert ** Parts of this book were great, especially when in the voice of Robert, a very intelligent 5 year old. The turmoil his father Patrick experiences in relation to several aspects of his life (his marriage, other women, his dying mother), are interesting to watch, but otherwise I found Patrick annoying. His wife, Robert's mother, is even more annoying- essentially giving up her marriage to coddle her children, particularly the youngest Thomas. This book is based on a trued story and, is part of a series of books St. Aubyn wrote. Not sure if I will ever pick up the others or not.
