Not your usual victim. This one is a very high ranking police officer who is bludgeoned to death in his own kitchen. Crombie always manages to make her characters and the relationship between her detectives, Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James, seem real.

Excellent book with Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James from Scotland Yard. Personal feelings for each other & a web of lies from the people being investigated keep them anxious. Lots of good reading here and a good feeling at the end of the book plus the mystery is solved.

Scotland Yard Superintendent Duncan Kincaid and Sergeant Gemma James are sent to suburban Surrey to investigate the murder of a high-ranking police officer. Alastair Gilbert was bludgeoned to death in his kitchen, and the list of potential suspects is long -- the man's arrogance earned him widespread enmity both in the village where he lived and in police circles. But Duncan and Gemma must put aside their personal feelings -- for the victim, as well as for each other -- to solve the most troubling case either has faced.

This is the fourth in Deborah Crombie's great series of Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James books. They should be read in order. This follows Share in Death, All Shall Be Well and Leave the Grave Green. The puzzles in these mysteries are great -- logical and psychological. A great treat to read in front of the fire one of these rainy nights.

The brutal murder of a much-despised police commander challenges Scotland Yard investigators Duncan Kincaid and Gemma James's relationship. Alastair Gilbert was bludgeoned to death in his kitchen, and the list of potential suspects is long - the man's arrogance earned him widespread enmity both in the village where he lived, and in police circles.
I started this series in 2012 and I am glad to be back reading book #4 in this engaging police procedural series. I found this book to be well-plotted with well-drawn characters and fast-paced dialogue. I enjoyed the town of Holmbury St. Mary and the atmosphere of the setting. Gemma James, sergeant, is having a secret relationship with her detective, Duncan Kincaid. In fact, the book seems to be about relationships; mother/daughter, husband/wife, lovers or police professionals. I looking forward to the next book as this series keeps getting better and better. I would highly recommend this series to those who like Scotland Yard mystery novels.
