A monster thriller about the supernatural and paranormal. Sinister, complex plot.
This book is about a man with a doppleganger. I enoyed this book.
From childhood, Ned Dunstan has experienced precognitive visions, a recurring dream of being tethered to a shadow and "the sense that something crucially significant, something without which I could never be whole, was missing." Summoned home to Edgerton, Ill., by a premonition of his mother's death on the eve of his 35th birthday, Ned finds himself implicated in a tangle of felonies and murders, all of which point to someone strenuously manipulating events to frame him. Digging into local history, he finds reason to believe that the mysterious father he never knew, or possibly a malignant doppelg?nger, are pulling the strings. Meanwhile, Mr. X, a homicidal misanthrope who reads H.P. Lovecraft's otherworldly horror fiction as gospel, cuts a swath of supernatural destruction across the country, en route to a showdown with his son, the "shadow-self" whom he must annihilate.
Premonitions, violent crimes, shadowy twin, mysteries- a thriller worth reading.
A must read for psychological thriller fans.

Not sure how I felt about this book. Very very strange story - typical Peter Straub. The story jumped around quite a bit but all came together at the end but left you with a "oh that's what happened" feeling. Tended to be lengthy at times and sometimes not sure how part of story fit in. Pretty good story over all with far away places and strange dreams going back years in time.
Very well written thriller.
Mr.X is the most enigmatic novel I have ever read, a true successor of Lovecraft. The story revolves around two narrators. Ned Dunstan, the computer designer who was recalled home by the death of his mother and Mr. X, Ned's father who believes he's the new Messiah to rid the world of petty, unworthy creatures in order to create a new world for the high intelligent ⦠alien.
From the start of the novel we learned that Ned possess some special ability, he has an high accurate six sense and thus by feeling that the death of his mother is near, he pack his things and head for Edgerton, Ill. His home. During his route, he encountered many strangers who claimed to know him and some were angry by his lack of recognition. When his own mother and family also claimed to have seen him, it is too much for pure coincidence, he settled to the belief that there is someone who looks strongly similar to him.
The novel continue to amaze you with the entries which Mr. X narrated for several chapters, for a long while I believe the person which Mr. X chased for many years is Ned, only to revealed that Ned has a twin brother. Robert. This brother seems to have more knowledge of the Dunstan family history and his powers, it is also known that he have known the existence of Ned long before him and have save his life couple of times.
Do not be mistaken, Robert didn't save Ned's life for pure brotherhood, instead he knew that in order to defend himself from his/their father, he would need both himself and Ned's powers.
The history of the Dunstan is a complex issue which Ned found out that his own father is also his own uncle, which made him a result of inbreeding, much to my disgust. This also involve with the secret of the most powerful family of the town, the Hatches. Anyway, I see no reason to disclose this vital information; I'll leave it up to you.
