This book surprised me. It is the story of a military pilot and crew who are transporting a radical mullah to another location in Afghanistan. Soon after take-off they are shot down and are stranded in a terrible snowstorm in one of the mountainous regions of Afghanistan. The pilot, an Army female officer, and the mullah must make it to safety in order to deliver the mullah to his destination, and they cannot stay at the plane because they are already under attack.

The story of their on-foot flight through a brutal snow storm is harrowing and so dangerous that you wonder if they will make it with any one of them alive. At the same time, the book describes the beauty of Afghanistan's landscape under snow and the starkness of it, especially when having to survive with only their good survival skills learned in the military and with little food and death not far away. Also, a scene where a local family takes them in, risking their own lives to help these people, and their kindness toward them softens not only the landscape, but the picture of Afghan people themselves.

Definitely a recommended book by me. I loved it.
