The Claire Malloy mystery series are very humorous. If you have lived with a teen age girl, you will appreciate the dialog between Claire and her daughter (the daughter always speaks in capital letters). Claire owns a bookstore in the old train depot in an Arkansas college town. Claire's boyfriend is the local detective who can't get Claire to stop sticking her nose in his business...murder that is. Claire hauls her daughter to a friend's new business, the Mimosa Inn for a murder weekend. After all, she is there to help her friend's new venture become established. The only problem is that the murder in the mystery weekend becomes a real murder and there is no lack of suspects, including Claire herself. This was the first book by Joan Hess that I ever read and I was hooked immediately. I love the series.

Who could resist the mock-murder weekend at the charming Mimosa Inn--certainly not the bookstore owner and amateur sleuth Claire Malloy, who decides to bring her petulant daughter Caron along for some detecting. But fiction becomes alarmingly real, as the mock-murder victim isn't just playing dead--he's really been bashed to death. More determined than ever to find the killer, Claire combs the grounds of the lovely inn for this most uninvited guest.

I just could not get into this book. I read the first in the series and enjoyed it, but not this one. I doubt I will read anymore of this author.

This was a good book. It had a nice mixture of an actual mystery with the planned one. And all the clues are there if you read it closely.
Nice book but not one of those lovely, fast-paced mysteries you just keep on reading because you simply couldn't put it down.

The second book in the Claire Malloy series. In this story Claire and her ever put-upon daughter Caron are spending a weekend at an old inn to take part in a murder mystery weekend. Claire is busy collecting clues while Caron is busy sulking in her room when the pretend murder victim ends up playing the role for real. Everyone is not who they are supposed to be and one of the guests is not even what he says he is in real life. Complications arise in the form of Claire and her new romantic interest, and homicide detective, Peter who warns Claire to go home and stop playing detective. Claire never seems to follow orders and races to solve the mystery before Peter.

This series has a "different" dry humor. Different style of writing than I'm used to. More formal?

Claire Malloy and Caron do a mock murder weekend at the charming Mimosa Inn. Mock murder so well done it takes a while to realize oops....no mock! Real!
