I had read somewhere that Donald E. Westlake (the best crime fiction writer ever, imho) recommended Howard Engel.
The writing is not bad but the story itself is kind of boring. I felt like someone was telling me a story while I was waiting for a bus.

It seemed like an easy case: a week at a bucolic fishing lodge keeping an eye on a well-known TV evangelist who was hiding out at a neighboring cottage. In addition to the usual distractions, however, Benny Cooperman soon finds himself coping with a shapely, bikini-clad seductress, a charming old lady who seems to know more than she will tell, and the very dead body of an Indian guide.
