This is a hard series to classify - set in turn of the century NYC, midwife Sarah Brandt is from a high society wealthy family but has chosen to strike out on her own - marrying the man of her choice and after his death, supporting herself. Historically accurate, the books are all well written and sometimes stark in their portrayal of women's roles (and even men's) during the time period. Her relationship with Det Sgt Mallory plays up the ethnic prejudices of the day ("the Irish") and the hardships of the working class (in this book particularly). The characters are well drawn, the book is well written and well plotted, but anyone thinking this is a pleasant little cozy would be mistaken - reality abounds. Great series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this second book in the Gaslight Series! A good read, a good mystery and a good story. The two main characters, Sarah Brandt and Frank Malloy, seemed to unfold in their development. You learned a little bit more about them, their families and their lives. Although I figured out "who done it" fairly early on, it didn't detract from my enjoyement of the book - I still didn't want to put it down!

This is a great book, got me into the Victorian Mysteries that I like so much now. The synopsis from the back: "As a midwife in the turn-of-the-century tenements of New York City, Sarah Brandt has seen suffering and joy, birth and death-and even murder. And the crime-ridden streets of the teeming city offer little relief from either..."

Late 19th century murder mystery investigated by a midwife and a bitter detective. This story took a few chapters to set up, but then I was hooked.

After reading the first book of this series I was hooked. No fancy CSI or lab work, but good old detective work. Keeps your attention and keeps you guessing. The perfect mystery. If you are a old fashioned mystery lover then this book is for you.

I just finished this book. It is the second of the "Gaslight Mysteries" and I found it to be very good, especially the bits about the midwife at the turn of the 20th century.

This is the second book in Victoria Thompson's Gaslight Mysteries series. It is quite enjoyable and offers more clues into the growing friendship between midwife Sarah Brandt and Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy. In this story in particular, we learn more about Frank's relationship with his son, Brian, and what is actually wrong with Brian. We even get to see a very feisty side to Sarah's elderly neighbor Mrs. Elsworth at one point in the book (when you get there, you'll know what I'm talking about & you'll enjoy it)!
As for the murder mystery in this story, Sarah goes to check on one of her patients, only to find out that the woman's sister has been murdered. This results in the patient giving birth a bit earlier than expected. Sarah feels she must find out who killed Gerta in order to ease the mind of the burdened sister. Sarah feels even more dedicated to this case once she and Malloy figure out that a number of other "Charity Girls" have been beaten to death the same way, suspecting there might be a serial killer. This story really give the reader an in depth look into the lives of "Charity Girls," life in the tenements, and even a glimpse at the wonder of Coney Island as an escape from the City. Although you can figure out "whodunit" pretty early on, it is still an enjoyable read!

Thoroughly enjoyed this as much as book one. Easy to relate to characters. Good read. Looking forward tonext one in seeker.
Love this series. Even though the mysteries are fairly easy to solve the characters are so well written it makes you want to keep reading. Can't wait to read the next one!
This is an exciting, well researched historical mystery. The characters are real and interaction between them is easily believed. The plot is well intertwined to led the reader to a conclusion that may not be at all correct, thus making the book more interesting. All in all it is a good series and a good read.
This is the 2nd book in the Gaslight series. Another who-dun-it but the story continues on from the 1st book. Beginning to like Mrs. Elsworth's outlook on things in a quirky kind of way. Looking forward to reading the 3rd book.

This is a great series. I have always loved history and it's a delight to me to read about life in early New York. The stories are not hard to figure out, but that really doesn't take away from the charm of the story. But as with all series, they are more enjoyable when read in order and I highly recommend they be read that way.

Midwife Sarah Brandt is called to the home of Agnes Otto. The heavily pregnant woman is in distress after learning that her sixteen-year-old sister, Gerda, has been murdered. Gerda and her friends are known as "Charity Girls", young women who like the city's nightlife and accept gifts from men in exchange for favors. It looks like one of these men may have killed Gerda. Since many people believe that Gerda got what she deserved, and the Otto family can't afford to pay the police to investigate, Sarah turns to Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy for help.
The second book in the Gaslight Mysteries series is another winner. Though it was pretty easy to figure out who murdered Gerda, it was still a good book. Victoria Thompson does an excellent job making us feel we are right there in New York City circa 1896. I'm also enjoying learning more and more about Sarah and Frank with each page. My rating: 4.5 Stars.

This had some sexually explicit parts. Not recommended for a younger set. This is set in the early days of New York and its seedy side.
In turn-of-the century New York City, midwife Sarah Brandt and Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy see birth and death--and even murder... Follow Sarah as she tries to solve another mysterious death.....great read.
I highly recommend every one of these books! Loaded with history and insight.
A gaslight mystery.
