Another great Gaslight Mystery by Victoria Thompson! This time Malloy and Sarah end up investigating a murder that takes place during a seance. The witnesses aren't too keen on participating as they are wealthy, highly respected society members, but each of them seems to have a motive.

This is one of the best series I have ever read! Very proper Mrs. Felix Decker, Sarah's mother, becomes imbroiled in murder. She and some other wealthy, influential people will do just about anything to keep the fact that they were at a seance (where someone was killed) out of the public's (and their family's) knowledge. It is up to Malloy to keep Sarah's mother's name free from scandal, and naturally, much to his chagrin, Sarah must once again assist him in his investigation!

This is the 11th book in Victoria Thompson's Gaslight Mysteries series and the last one out so far (hopefully another is in the works soon)! Midwife Sarah Brandt agrees to attend a seance with her mother, Mrs. Decker, in order to help Mrs. Decker overcome the guilt she feels over Sarah's sister's death years ago. Mrs. Decker hopes that the seance will allow her to talk to Maggie's spirit and ask for forgiveness. After not having luck at the first sitting, Sarah thought that her mother was done attending seance. A few weeks pass and Sarah is called upon by a police officer to come pick up her mother because a person was murdered at a seance she was attending.
Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy didn't think he'd get Sarah involved in investigating another murder. That is, until he's called to a scene by a woman named Sarah Brandt, though it was actually Mrs. Decker trying to keep her famous name out of the papers (no one would bother with her midwife daughter, but a wealthy socialite would give the papers a field-day). Together, Mrs. Decker, Sarah, and Malloy need to find out who killed the woman at the seance and how it was possible since everyone in the pitch-black room had been holding wrists in a circle and someone would have noticed a person moving. Will they solve the mystery in time before someone else dies? Will the blame fall to a poor Italian immigrant in order to protect the wealthy socialites that were in attendance at the seance? Who could have murdered someone in front of all of those people? You'll only find out if you read it!
This was a very entertaining read, but I must say that yet again I am disappointed in the Sarah-Malloy dynamic. The do spend a lot of time separately contemplating their feelings for each other (YAY), but they have considerably less interaction in this book than in many of the others (boo). Hopefully the next book in the series will move beyond the relationship in their heads and move towards the relationship in their hearts!

Sarah Brandt is not completely surprised when her very proper mother asks her to attend a seance. She knows that Mrs. Decker still carries great guilt over the death of her older daughter, Maggie. So Sarah accompanies her and the spiritualist does seem to contact Maggie -- convincing Mrs. Decker to attend another seance. Only this time, one of the attendees doesnt succeed in speaking to the dead -- she joins them. Now, its up to Sarah and Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy to protect Mrs. Decker from scandal -- by determining how a woman was murdered in the pitch dark when every suspect was holding the hand of the person next to them
This is really a good series of books --- learned a lot about seances, also interesting because the flashlight was invented during this epic --- and, as no one would buy them they were given to the police department. A well written intriguing book, would recommend to any one anywhere who enjoys reading.
Great Series...Love all the books. Murder on Waverly Place is another winner.

When Sarah Brandt's mother, Mrs. Felix Decker, attends a séance against her daughter's wishes, one of the attendees ends up dead. Mrs. Decker requests that Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy investigate so he can protect the rich Mrs. Decker from any scandal. With the help of Sarah, Frank discovers that all of the attendees were sitting in the dark holding hands while Madam Serafina called up the spirits. Since everyone was holding hands, Frank and Sarah need to figure out how someone entered the dark room and killed on of the attendees without anyone noticing.
Another good addition to the Gaslight Mysteries series. Every one of the suspects had reasons for wanting the victim dead. We just had to figure out which one really used a stiletto to end a life while everyone else was oblivious. My rating: 4 Stars.
