The Mwindo Epic from the Banyanga (Zaire)
The Mwindo Epic from the Banyanga - Zaire Author:Translators: D Biebuyck + K Mateene Tells the story of a chief who orders his wives to only have female children. One wife gives birth to the hero Mwindo. The chief tries repeatedly to kill his infant son, but he is magically prevented. Finally he has the baby put inside a drum and thrown into a river. The river carries him to the abode of the magic serpent Mukititi. He is th... more »e husband of the chief's sister, Mwindo's aunt). She rescues him, allying herself with Mwindo rather than her brother. After many adventures the hero returns to his village as the new chief and his father is reconciled to him.
Later, Mwindo kills the magical being Dragon. Lightening has a blood pact with Dragon, but he is also friendly toward Mwindo. Lightening seizes the hero and takes him up into the heavens (a desolate place of extreme cold and heat). Mwindo is confident: he has defeats all his adversaries. But here there is no room for his arrogance or his heroism. After Mwindo has suffered, Lightening extracts a promise that Mwindo will never kill another animal. Mwindo is returned to his village, knowing there are somethings he can't conquer.
The narrator/singer tells his audience the truths they should learn from this epic.
This is how the book is laid out. First - a description of the Banyanga people (which i didn't read). Next - a summary of the story. (We need this, because a lot of the details don't make sense to us.) Then - the epic. Finally - the epic in the Banyanga tongue.
The book is old (1971) but it is in very good condition.« less
