"SUPERB...I'LL HEARTILY RECOMMEND ON MYSTIC LAKE TO ANY WOMAN... WHO DEMANDS THAT A STORY LEAVE HER IN A SATISFIED GLOW." - The Washington Post Book World

Annie Colwater's husband has just confessed that he's in love with a younger woman. Devastated, Annie retreats to the small town where she grew up. There, she is reunited with her first love, Nick Delacroix, a recent widower who is unable to cope with his silent, emotionally scarred young daughter. Together, the three of them begin to heal. But just when Annie believes she's been given a second chance at happiness, her world is turned upside down again, and she is forced to make a choice that no woman in love should ever have to make...

On MYSTIC LAKE is the story of one woman, but it speaks to all of us - to anyone who has ever had to find the courage to choose between what is... and what could be.

Since I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, Kristin Hannah's books have a special place in my heart. Having said that, Hannah has a real voice that speaks all the thoughts and feelings we might have when life goes along with nothing happening, only to twist and turn the way that lives can. I highly recommend any book written by Kristin Hannah...an excellent writer.

Annie Colwater has been married to Blake for 20 years but as their daughter, Natalie, leaves home for a trip to London and then onto college, Blake confesses that he is in love with a younger woman. Annie decides to go home and visit her father. She meets up again with her first love, Nick Delacroix, a recent widower, and his young emotionally scarred daughter, Izzy. Together they begin to heal but soon her world is turned upside down again. I found this book to be an emotional roller coaster and the twists and turns kept me turning the pages. It's a story of a 2nd chance at life where cleaning up the first one can be a bit messy. This is an early book from Kristin Hannah and you can see that she is winding up for some of her better stories. I love to watch how a writer's voice transforms and this is a good place to start with Kristin Hannah. If you like chick-lit, then you will enjoy this one!

Hannah pulls out all the stops in this one. She dumps in crumbling marriage, empty-nest syndrome, long-lost loves, neglected children, traumatized children, loss of a parent, homelessness, substance abuse, suicide, mental illness, and pretty much every hanky-dampening situation in the romance writers' playbook.

In other words, her fans will eat this up.

It all starts when Annie Colwater's husband announces, apparently out of the blue, that he has fallen in love with another woman and wants a divorce. He drops this bombshell moments after the couple has put their 17-year-old daughter on a plane for London.

Shocked and confused, Annie returns to her hometown on the Olympic Peninsula, to spend time with her father and to try to reorganize her life. Looking for something to fill her days, she agrees to help her first love, Nick, with his six-year-old daughter, so traumatized by her mother's suicide that she is nearly catatonic.

Things build pretty predictably from there, and even the "surprise twist" at the three-quarter point is something the long-time romance reader will have seen coming, though Hannah does manage to dodge one cliche bullet in the resolution.

The ending drags somewhat as Annie tries to decide between new-old love and old-established love, between comfort and adventure, and between doing what's expected of her and doing what she really wants.

Beautiful read. Annie's only child leaves for college and her husband is in love with a younger woman. She moves back to Mystic Lake and is reunited with her first love, a recent widower with a grieving, too-silent, six year old daughter. A great story of healing and hope.

I don't usually read romance-type novels, but this one caught my eye and was refreshingly good and well written. I enjoyed the themes of love and compassion depicted within the characters.

All Kristin Hannah's books are great so this one is no exception. Short but very good story.
