A compelling, if unusual, read. The narrator, Will Avery, is 18 years old and has just moved into his first apartment, after a falling out with his mother's boyfriend. He and his new housemates all struggle with anxieties and loneliness. On top of that, Will and his mother share a hidden secret which Will often thinks about and is afraid will be revealed.

One day, Will meets Zara, a local gypsy girl, and together they embark on their first real love. Zara has a secret too, but the two agree, "I won't tell you mine, if you won't tell me yours." But...how long can that last?

Will's secret is one I never saw coming, but perhaps should have in reading retrospect. I found Will and Zara sweet and real, age appropriate and hopeful. I enjoyed this book.

*** Three stars.
