Sometimes a difficult book to read, Japanese POW camp is not a setting for a light read. I thought this would be a book about the Australian men in the camp, but it's also about the Japanese guards.

Wow. Harrowing is right, but so is 'an immense achievement and a symphony of tenderness.' I was not able to stop reading until I finished it. After I was done I read some of the reviewers comments and saw that one of them said the author's father was a survivor of the Burma Death Railway and that his father died on the very day this devastatingly beautiful novel was completed. How absolutely incredible.
