If you've never read Connelly or if you've read Connelly, but not one of his Bosch books, this is a great one to start with. It sets the stage for many of his later books. When I read the back of one of Connelly's Bosch books, I never thought I would be interested, but a friend lent me a copy so I gave it a try. NOW I AM HOOKED! I think I've now read every book Connelly has ever written.
Helpful Score: 4
A good book on its own, but a real treat for anyone who has followed the Connelly characters of Harry Bosch, Rachel Walling, and Terry McCaleb as they all come together in this novel. Suspenseful and fast paced.
I would recommend reading both The Poet and Blood Work before reading this book.
(One fun tidbit: Connelly wrote the book Blood Work which was subsequently made into a Clint Eastwood movie. Then in this book, one of Connelly's fictional characters refers back to the movie complaining about how he was portrayed and discussing the royalty he received for the use of his likeness. Loony. )

In this one, he pulls in Terry McCaleb (Blood Work) and Rachel (the FBI agent who shot the Poet) and The Poet (Backus-agent turned serial killer) and of course, Mr. Harry Bosch. I love everything by Connelly. This is another great one. (10th of the Bosch series)

Wonderful series. But be sure and read The Poet first.

One of Connelly's better stories. A good sequel to the very good "The Poet." Good, strong well developed characters and plot. Proves Connelly can really write a good tale when he wants to.
Helpful Score: 1
Another great Connelly read. However, it needs to be read in chronological order--as do most of his books--to get the real flavor of Bosch and his other characters.
Helpful Score: 1
An outstanding book. Typical Connelly book. Many twists and turns. Connelly has a way of weaving many characters from other books into his current books.

This is a sequel to The Poet - a must read after you have read The Poet. Fast-paced and lots of great police/FBI investigation work and you'll not be able to put the book down until it is finished.

If you love suspense you have to love Harry Bosch!

THE NARROWS is not the best book to read if this is the readers first experience with Michael Connelly. This author, like many others, has an ongoing story about the main and some secondary characters. Please look at the booklist below.
I would recommend reading the books with the double asterisk in order: THE POET > BLOOD WORK > A DARKNESS MORE THAN NIGHT > THE NARROWS. There are so many references to the previous books; most new readers will be aggravated that they do not grasp their significance in the current book.
The Poet is back! Hes the diabolical serial murderer that started his career in the FBI; thus, he knows all the tricks and knows how the FBI thinks. Now, Terry McCaleb, an ex-FBI profiler and serial killer expert, has died.
His wife wants Harry Bosch to investigate because the blood work from the autopsy shows that McCaleb did NOT have any of the critical medicines in his blood stream at the time of his death. These medicines helped his transplanted heart to function without them, he died.
McCalebs business partner and his wife assure Harry that Terry was religious about taking his meds. Terry kept his old files (unsolved cases) and regularly worked them in his spare time. As Harry works his way through those cases, he realizes that Terry was on the Poets trail.
This is a taut drama with lots of dead-ends and twists. The pacing is excellent; I had to finish it because I couldnt put it down. 5 STARS

Another great entry in the Harry Bosch mystery series. Several times in this book, Clint Eastwood and "the movie" were mentioned. I googled it and found that a previous Michael COnnelly book, BLOOD WORK, was the basis for a 2002 movie starring Eastwood as Terry McCaleb. In THE NARROWS, Bosch is investigating McCaleb's death. Very interesting and complex plot, but all the loose ends were tied up satisfactorily by the end.
I have always been a fan of the Harry Bosch series. This one mentions a lot of places near my home so it made it even more special.
Good police procedural
Read this before you read "The Closers"
FBI agent Rachel Walling finally gets the call she has dreaded for years. The one that tells her the Pooet has resurfaced. She has never forgotten the serial killer who wove lines of poetry in his hideous crimes- and apparently he has not forgotten her.
Another good one by Michael Connelly
Another good one by Michael Connelly
Excellent thriller. If you haven't read "The Poet", I'd read that first so you know "who's who"!
beaumont and brady at their best when they meet again in an odd set of murders that are linked to a central character the poet who is a former FBI behaviorilist who is now a seriel killer.
Great Harry Bosch mystery with Bosch and FBI agent Rachel Walling taking on the resurgent Poet serial killer.
Turgid thriller with all the pacing excitement of a snail race. Part of the Harry Bosch series, this time dealing with Bosch investigating the death of a retired FBI agent which appears to be tied to the reappearance of a serial-killer rogue agent.
Great, quick read. Michael Connelly is THE best mystery/thriller writer out there today. I couldn't put this book down. (former LAPD detective) Harry Bosch helps out a friend, and gets drawn deeper and deeper into an FBI case and an old enemy. If you like mysteries/police procedurals, you'll love this book too!
exciting; lots of tension
I love these books with Harry Bosch and this one adds in Terry McCaleb in the story. A great read!
A great Harry Bosch book - that brings The Poet, Rachel Walling and Harry Bosch together. Very enjoyable!
Another GREAT Harry Bosch story!!!!!
All Harry Bosch books are great. I now have my Hubby hooked after only one. Great Read!
I love the Harry Bosch series!
I AM NEVER DISAPOINTED IN THE MICHAEL CONNELLY MYSTERIES
Another great Harry Bosch book.By a fine writer of Police dramas. and Mysreries. though this may be a little waker than some of the others.
another good one by Connelly.
Harry Bosch, my hero
I absolutely loved this book! It is a great police thriller--however, it is somewhat violent. There are also some mild adult scenes and a great deal of bad language, so be warned. The author has a wonderful, "deep" style, is very observant of human nature, and goes beyond a simple exciting plot. To be honest, I hesitate to list this, because I'm sure I'll read it again at some point!
The Narrows Michael Connelly This was a good follow up Novel to âThe Poetâ. The poet is back after eight years and he is killing again. Harry Bosch's friend dies a mysterious death and his wife has asked him to check into it. Harry must unravel the clues and with the help of Rachel Walling, the FBI agent, they must stop The Poet from striking again. This was a good book, it kept my interest throughout, it was a non-stop energy ride with plenty of twists and turns. The ending however was not worthy of this book or the book âThe Poetâ. If the ending would have been better this book would have been a 5/5. Instead, it ended as somewhat of a dud. Grade 3/5
A very good book. I really enjoyed this one.
How can you go wrong with Harry Bosch? Michael Connelly is at the top of my favorite authors list - and The Narrows doesn't disappoint.
Excellent! Kept me reading all night long.
Exceptional book, enjoyed it tremendously.
awesome book...
Another great Harry Bosch novel. Michael Connelly is one of the best.
I love the Harry Bosch character and this story lived up to my expectations. Michael Connelly fans will not be disappointed.
***** Connelly's Harry Bosch novels just keep getting better
love all harry bosch
Loved it! Had trouble putting it down.
Another good novel by Michael Connelly. An FBI agent is trying to track down a resurfaced serial killer who got away from her years before and effectively ended her career. A bit scary, a bit intriguing...basically a easy read when you're in the mood for something light.
another great read by Michael Connelly!! Once I start I can't stop.
5-star awesome and gripping thriller
Great book!!!!!
Excellent follow up to The Poet
Mr.Connelly is at the height of his powers in this novel. Harry Bosch is one of those rare charcters who gets more interesting the longer Mr.Connelly writes about him. This novel ties together many plot points from previous novels as Harry matches wits with the poet, the serial killer from the novel "The Poet" The tension in this novels builds to a explosive climax that will keep you on the edge of your seat. If your interested in the best writing in crime fiction you can't do any better than Michael Connelly.
Most recent in the "Harry Bosch" detective novels. Is the sequel to "The Poet" and also involves Terry McCaleb (from "Bloodwork") in the plot.
Connelly's books are always great. So is this one. Couldn't put it down.
This was my first foray into the Harry Bosch stories. It was a great read! It had a puzzle to solve, a romantic interest, danger and thrills. I really enjoyed it and cannot wait to read more of the Bosch escapades!
Excellent read. Convinced me to order more from this author.
Outstanding!
With a writer of Connellys popularity, particularly one that works with a regular cast of characters, mixed reviews are to be expected. Each successive book opens the possibility of a narrative letdown. Part of Connellys decision to collate a few of his most enduring characters into The Narrows was to address concerns many fans had with the ending of The Poet. Though it strikes a few critics as a risky move that doesnt bear repeating, the general consensus is that Connelly pulls the sequel off. Some reviewers disagree about whether the back-story is ample enough for the uninitiated. But whether The Narrows is his best or his worst work, its has elements of both, and plenty of the subtle characterization and gripping storyline that fans have come to expect from Connelly.
this is a great book, had a hard time putting it down.
Great story as usual from Connelly.
Connelly just gets better and better ... I liked this one about the return of "The Poet" a lot!
Another great addition to the Harry Bosch series. Connelly's books are all fabulous. This one is good but a little tired compared to previous books.
THE NARROWS by Michael Connelly: In this sequel to The Poet (1996) retired LAPD Detective Harry Bosch begins to suspect that the notorious serial killer The Poet, presumed dead, may be the culprit in the death of ex-FBI profiler Terry McCalab. As he digs deeper, Bosch meets and eventually joins forces with FBI agent Rachel Walling, who went up against The Poet the first time around. The interactions between Bosch, Walling and The Poet make this a delightfully twisty addition to the Bosch legacy.
another Harry Bosch book. This time an F.B.I. friend has died. The guys wife asks Harry to find out what happened to him. In doing so Harry is thrown into the middle of an F.B.I. investigation, and narrowly escapes with his life.
A little slow to start but speeds up half way through. Not a book to read if you don't have patience to go through character development.
This 10th Harry Bosch novel links the retired LA cop with
characters from previous non-Bosch novels. A serial killer
and ex-FBI agent named Robert Backus, the title character
from Michael Connelly's first novel, THE POET, was commonly
thought to be dead. But now the Poet has resurfaced and
has started killing again. At risk is FBI agent Rachel
Walling, a former protégé of Backus who subsequently
investigated his first killing spree. As she begins a
new hunt for the Poet, her path crosses that of
Harry Bosch, who believes that the natural-seeming death
of a friend, Terry McCaleb (a character from Connelly's
BLOOD WORK and A DARKNESS MORE THAN NIGHT), may actually
have been one of the Poet's murders.

Another excellent book by Michael Connelly, lots of suspense in the hunt for a serial killer.
Harry solves another one - outside the boundaries of the department
a real thriller..well written and held my attention to the end
This is the sequel to The Poet and a good read as all of his books are.
If you've read the Poet, you need to read the Narrows to complete the story.
Excellent, suspenseful Michael Connelly
Great papge-turner- read it all in one seating. Helps if you have read his previous books especially The Poet and Blood Work
Terry McCaleb is dead. The official verdict is that his transplanted heart failed. His wife contacts Harry Bosch because she thinks someone switched his medication. While investigating Harry runs into a serial killer and the FBI who don't want him around. Book stands alone but it is more meaningful if you read The Poet and Blood Work first. Very good book.
This is an exciting Harry Bosch book. It keeps you guessing till the end. Very hard to put down, once you start it.
Still loving Harry Bosch!
This book was a wild ride!
Female FBI agent dealing with escaped serial killer. Sequel to The Poet. Good read. Believable female character. Also part of the sries with retired LAPD Harry Bosch.
As usual, Michael Connelly does a wonderful job of story telling.
The Famous Poet is back and detective Bosch is pressed back into the hunt for this serial killer.
Another good Bosch story from Connelly, his best character.
The Poet surfaces and Detective Harry BNosch gets the call............
A real page turner featuring detective Hieronymous (Harry) Bosch.
If you like the Harry Bosch series, you'll like this one - the Poet resurfaces. It makes more sense if you've read the previous books in the series.
Michael Connelly is one of my very favorite authors. His NARROWS lives up to his other great novels. No regrets associated with this book.
Excellent read - on it's own, or in the series...
Good Read
Harry Bosch at his finest, I enjoyed the book
This is the best "Harry Bosch" book yet. This is very suspenseful and believeable. I love it!
good story
Unabridged on 7 cassettes.
Can't put it down!! My wife read it and said it as good!!
Scarifying in a big way.
Great read!
Harry Bosch is working as a private investigator when he is contacted concerning the death of a friend. Was it natural causes or was it murder? Harry's investigation leads him to the California desert where he finds the FBI uncovering several bodies. He also finds FBI Agent Rachel Walling. After years of silence, Rachel has received a note from the Poet, a serial killer who disappeared without a trace several years ago and Rachel's former boss. Harry and Rachel join forces when they realize they may be searching for the same person.
This book brings together Harry Bosch and the Poet. The first part of the story moved fast with Harry's investigation intersecting with Rachels. The second half was a little slower for me. The search takes Harry to Las Vegas where he visits his daughter and ex-wife. I could have done without that part of the book. The ending of the book was very exciting. I recommend you read "The Poet" before reading this book. Actually, I recommend the whole Harry Bosch series. My rating: 4 Stars.

Sometimes gory thriller where "outsider" cops track down a serial killer.
Solid, fast paced story - brings three of Connelly's characters together. I got so engrossed with the story that I couldn't put it down for more than a few minutes. He has such a compelling story-telling style that grips you immediately and doesn't let go. You just can't wait to see what happens next.
Private investigator Harry Bosch confronts a villain who's long been in hiding - a fiend known as the Poet.

The return of the Poet... and maybe he'll get his in the end!
I always enjoy the Harry Bosch series and this is as good as the rest. This one is a little darker, also, will he or won't he decide to get back in the policemans game again
I have not read this, but my husband really liked it. It is sort of a sequel to "The Poet," but you do not have to read that one first in order to enjoy this book.
FBI Agent Rachel Walling encounters a serial killer from her past. Former LAPD Det. Harry Bosch becomes involved in the same case from a different angle. His old partner dies and the widow thinks it was not an accident. During his investigation, Rachel and Harry have to work together and through issues from their past to catch the Poet.
From Publishers Weekly
Those who are familiar with the audio adaptations of Connelly's books will be delighted to see that Cariou lends his talents to Connelly's latest mystery, which is a sequel to The Poet (1996). At the center of this engrossing thriller is world-weary, retired L.A. homicide detective Harry Bosch. While investigating the death of ex-FBI profiler Terry McCalab, Bosch begins to suspect that the notorious serial killer The Poet, presumed dead, may be the culprit. As he digs deeper, Bosch meets and eventually joins forces with FBI agent Rachel Walling, who went up against The Poet the first time around. The novel's point of view cuts from Bosch's first-person commentary to the third-person perspectives of Walling and The Poet. Cariou handles these changes with professional ease. He gives Bosch a rough voice, raspy with experience, and provides Walling with a younger, but no less tough, intonation. Cariou's vocal dexterity becomes truly apparent, however, when he reads Connelly's descriptive passages. Whether he is illuminating a grisly crime scene, a rainstorm pummeling a Los Angeles freeway or a soft moment between Bosch and his young daughter, Cariou perfectly captures the subtleties of Connelly's tightly written prose.

Love Harry Bosch!
FBI agent Rachel Walling gets call she's dreaded for years re: The Poet. Former LAPD detective Harry Bosch gets a call also. Now the two are at odds with the FBI...squarely in the path of the Poet, who will lead them on a wicked ride out of the heat, through the narrows of evil and into his darkness. A great page turner.
Yet ANOTHER GREAT Harry Bosch story by Michael Connelly, NY Times Bestseller.
Excellent police thriller. Connelly really writes well.
FBI agent, Rachel Wallin, discovers the serial killer known as "The Poet" is not dead, and he has not forgotton her.
FBI agent Rachel Walling joins forces with former LAPD detective Harry Bosch and land squarely in the path of the Poet through the narrows of evil.
Written in 2004--Rachel Walling has to face the Poet again.
A GOOD DETECTIVE STORY. INTERESTING SERIAL KILLER PLOT. FAST READ. GOOD FOR BEACH OR PLANE!
Another good Connelly book.
Harry Bosch connects with FBI folks from the Poet, who returns in this one.
Another great one from Connelly without the usual twist at the end.
Honestly, I read it so long ago, I don't remember much about it.
