I enjoyed this book. There was little of the annoying "eat yellow cheese" or "whuph" [goes the horse] or other things that almost defined the earlier Recluce books.
And yet it was the same story. Boy won't face what is needed, so gets exiled. Learns all about himself out in the big bad world.
But having the same story formula isn't a bad thing. I've read all the Recluce books up to this one and I keep on enjoying them. It is kind of like wrapping an old warm blanket around oneself. It isn't pretty, it is familiar, but it is comforting. The Recluce books are my mashed potatoes of books :-)
