This was a very good book. I'd recommend it to people who love the outdoors and are interested in what goes on in the daily like of a ranger.

Nature Noir presents the downside of our beautiful national parks, as told from the perspective of a park ranger in the Sierra Nevada river canyons. Jordan Fisher Smith, the author, spent over a decade protecting this land, even though its been condemned to be inundated by a large dam. Quality of life isnt a priority for park rangers, and while they do have lovely offices in which to work, they also have some pretty crazy co-workers. Smith encounters armed miners looking for gold, squatters looking for their next fix, and type-A personalities looking for the next big thing to jump off or climb.
Park rangers have a dangerous job and most of us dont realize how dangerous. The animals are the least of their concerns, although in one part, Smith comes across the corpse of a woman mauled by a mountain lion. As the dam construction continues, a woman goes missing, and Smith searches for her body. A very compelling read, and recommended for anyone who loves the great outdoors.

A Park Ranger's stories...interesting and different.

This is an excellent book that takes place in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. I've passed this on to as many people as I can who ramble those hills.

This book tells the story of one of the Park Service rangers who has a job in a park outside of San Francisco. It tells of some of his adventures, but also gives some history about the Gold Rush and some of the history of how the Park system came to be. I enjoyed the book, not knowing much about the Park system If you like this genre you will enjoy this book.
