When teenager Michelle Turner becomes pregnant, she finds herself abandoned by both her angry father and her ranch-hand lover, Sam McPhee, who vanishes before she can give him the news. When her father is at risk of dying from kidney failure 17 years later, Michelle, a successful single mom with a beloved but difficult son in tow, returns to tiny Crystal City, Mont., to donate the kidney that can save her father's life. Michelle is prepared to deal with the trauma of surgery, an estranged father and a rebellious child, but she is completely unprepared when she encounters Sam McPhee. Now a prosperous rancher and doctor, Sam quickly recognizes Cody as his, and with that revelation, a damaged family begins to heal itself. Overabundant flashbacks give the novel's first half a frustrating stop-and-start rhythm, and the character of Michelle never quite comes into focus. In contrast, Cody is beautifully and believably wrought as a teenager who hides a good heart under a bad attitude. Fragmented families are a romance staple, and Wiggs's sensitive portrayal of parents and lovers trying to bond despite a less-than-perfect past exemplifies the richness and realism this theme can lend a love story.

Good book but fairly predictible. Started slow and in some places it dragged but keep with it; it gets better. Not one of Wiggs best but still a good read.

Faulous book about horses, a medical underplot and great plot about families lost and found again.

Susan Wiggs began her writing career by authoring historical novels. This 2001 publication was her first venture into modern romance stories, and she did an admirable job. The story takes place in Montana and has all the trappings of a Western with the complications of a modern relationship. A very good read.

Michelle Turner goes back to the Montana town where she grew up to face her sick father, who she really never knew, and the father of her son, who didn't even know he had a son.

I've been reading each book in order that Susan Wiggs has written and I can truly say, with each book, she gets better and better, leaving me to eagerly anticipate the next book. Practice does make perfect. I enjoyed the Montana setting of this book and she inspired me enough to visualize the great scenery and I enjoyed the plot of long lost lovers with paths that cross once again. Enjoy.

Good, if not predictible story about a lost love that is found again.

At last, Michelle Turner is going back to th Montana town where she grew up too fast, fell in love too hard, and wound up pregnant and alone. Because of the now-successful advertising executive has just learned that only she can save the father she barely knew, an aging Hollywood star. What Michelle cannot know is that this journey home will be her last chance to save herself as well.

For her sick father, she must bridge the gulf that distance & time have widened. For her troubled teenage son, she must find the miracle that will pull him away from the abyss that threatens his future. And for Sam McPhee, the man who left her yrs ago, she must take the most frightening - and most exhilarating - step of all; Face the truth that hurts . . .and the love that heals.

This book was fantastic! I wanted it to go on and on. I would love to see a follow up story on what happens to the characters next. If you like books that leave you feeling good, this is it!

If this were still summer time I'd say not a bad book to read at the beach. If you're looking for predictable, easy, a no thought provoking book then this is the one for you. Not awful, I finished it but certainly nothing profound here.

This one was okay. It was a fast, easy read but I had a hard time forming an emotional connection to Michelle. Instead of spending so many pages telling me repeatedly how cold & reserve she has become, I would have liked to read a bit more about how she became that way. Wiggs glanced over it but that was it. I actually felt more in tuned with Sam's or Cody's reactions and emotions.

Not Wigg's best work but passable.
