This is probably the best sock knitting book I have ever seen.

This is a wonderful book that lets you choose--choose the sock size, choose the yarn, make a swatch, and the book tells you how many stitches to cast on for that size. There's a complete size table that tells you the number of stitches to cast on for the gauge you are knitting with the yarn YOU choose. No more searching in vain to find exactly the yarn called for in the pattern.

Choose top down or toe up, different heel turnings, different toe options, different ribbings, cast on options, and sock tops including tabs so you can pull your socks on like boots. There are several ways to turn the heel and do the increases/decreases for the instep that you have never seen before and will definitely want to try. There are knit & purl patterns, lace patterns, or color patterns. It also tells you how to adapt your favorite stitch pattern to the methods shown in the book. The options in this book could keep you knitting socks for years.

If you are looking for a book of sock patterns, this is not the book for you. This is first and foremost a TECHNIQUE book that just happens to have some patterns. I also don't think this book is beginner-friendly because of the non-linear approach Cat takes to knitting socks, you kind of need to have a base to fully grasp how she is presenting the material. She doesn't post a picture of a sock and proceed to list the materials you'll need and the row by row instructions. That's why I say this isn't a pattern book, you will learn different toes, insteps, heels, heel flaps, legs and cuffs. From cuff-down to toe-up. She will tell you to mix and match your favorite toe with your favorite heel, she'll show you where increases should go and where you can lay the pattern of the sock.

In short, she will completely change how you look at socks! I've only had my copy less than a week and already the spine is cracked, I've got post-it's to index the thing, and I've got a gazillion ideas running through my head. I haven't been this excited over a sock book in ages! The only thing that makes me happier is knowing there are two more books coming in this series.

I better go buy more yarn...
