I really enjoyed this installment in the series. It was nice to have Mercy and the pack on home turf again. I've been awaiting the return of Stefan and more involvement with Tad. While I didn't exactly get my wish with Stefan, at least he had a small part to play in the book. The books do seem to be going into the same format with Mercy almost dead at the end, but I still enjoy the story and going back to the Tri-Cities. I'm looking forward to seeing what the two new developments at the end will mean for the coming books.

Loved it. When I got to the end, it was awesome. All of it. This whole series is great. Am glad to see old friends and Mercy meets some new ones also.
I give a five star review when a book ends and I'm mad that it ended. What happens next, then for the next few days the rich story just keeps filtering back to me even thought I am reading another book.
This story will not be as enjoyable for you if you do not read the other 7 stories first. It builds on characters and story lines. The reason why it's in hardcover is because so many of us LOVE it, they can make us pay more.

Briggs always leaves me wanting more each and every time, and this was no exception. it's good to see Briggs embracing her Alpha status. I was a bit annoyed at Briggs always holding herself back because she didn't want to appear jealous and alienate the Pack. I thought that was a ridiculous theme considering the possessiveness of pack members. I also didn't appreciate how the pack treated her seeing as how she has proven herself to be a better warrior than most of them and put her life on the line for them time and time again. I guess my description tells you how much I am invested in the characters :-). I like that Mercy may have a new ally. Looking forward to the next book.
So, Christy, Adam's ex-wife has a stalker. This stalker also happens to be of the supernatural variety and has killed.
On top of that, Mercy has to find Coyote and ask for the walking stick back. The fae it belongs to wants it back.
I admit I was putting off reading this one because of the Christy story-line. I was frustrated that Christy got so much love and support from the Pack. That she abandoned. Since "werewolves can tell when people are lying," I didn't expect Christy to have so much power. She is a master of persuasion and manipulation. (Are we sure she's human? 'Cause the bitch is good).
But then, finally, the story was much less about Christy and about so much more. We learn more about Mercy's bond with Stefan, the pack bonds, Tad. There were moments that showed Mercy has the love and support of the pack. Honey stepped up when it counted. So did Auriele and Mary Jo.
I hope Gary Laughingdog sticks around. Zach too (a new submissive wolf that drifts from pack to pack).
The set-up is on for more possible conflicts with the fae and vampires.

Great addition to the Mercy Thompson series!
Ancient Volcano Fire God, visits from Coyote, lots of action.
And with the return of Adam's ex-wife, lots of drama! Small spoiler - I loved how Mercy finally decides to deal with the ex-wife.
An all around good story!

This series gets better and better and that is one of the reasons I <3 these books. Mercy will need loads of patients this time around, because Adam's ex wife is back and bring a disastrous volcano God to the Tri-cities area. Christy will try to get the pack on her side and push Mercy away but the human never should estimated a conniving coyote walker. Most of the pack might hate Mercy but there are some that will side with her then the ex. We got some new team players.into the mix, Joel, a friend that Mercy helps out with his love of cars, his wife a dog whisper and Gary Laughingdog, Mercy's brother, Coyote son. He is a seer and Mercy will need his help in more ways then one. Daddy dearest is up to tricks but with good-ish intentions. Lot more to look forward to in the up coming books, and hope Tad will get free after his true self was revealed in saving Mercy for a fire spitting volcanic God/ hellhound.
I will be eagerly waiting for more and I really do hope the Honey and Gary do come together, they both need moral and love in heartbroken lives.
