4 stars for well written plot and flesh and blood characters who come alive. Bishop and Marika are well matched in more ways than one.
Look forward to the next book in series.

I love Smith's take on vampires (drinking from the Blood Grail of Lilith) and I was enamored with the 1899 setting. I read this one after the first of the series (that I absolutely loved) and found this one much more "hot" than the first. The story was almost overshadowed with love scenes, something I appreciated part one for not having too much of. Nevertheless, it was a good story, and continued on with the Brotherhood of Blood and the Order of the Silver Palm. Smith's writing is wonderful and I think she has a good series going...I hope the rest follow suit.

To be honest I really didn't like the first book in this series, Be Mine Tonight, because I didn't care for the characters and I felt the plot was slow. I read this, the second book, out of sheer determination to give the series a second try. I am glad that I did.
First, the characters are quite interesting. Marika is particularly engaging--she is strong, fierce, and full of heart. Furthermore, she grows significantly over the course of the book. The plot was much more well balanced with action and romance. It is slow in a few places but really never enough to be boring. I really enjoy the 1899 setting--it adds to the richness of the tale. I recommend this book to anyone looking to continue with a dramatic romantic series.

I've read so many vampire stories and this is one the better stories I've read. It stands apart from mediocre vampire fiction. I read this book over a day. The author held my interest from the first page. I like her use of imagery. I could picture the setting in 19th century Romania. The dialogue is crisp and realistic. The hero and heroine are likable. There isn't any Big Misunderstanding complicating their relationship. The romance was done well without overpowering the story. There was even a decent plot about a secret order that hunts the Shadow world. I would recommend this book to people who like paranormal fiction.

Smith's Brotherhood of Blood series ranks right up with Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood and Showalter's Lords of the Underworld. It's refreshing to have the heroes not be tortured souls to the point of annoyance, which can oft times be the case with similar story lines. After the 1st couple of chapters, I jumped back on here to request book #3. Can't wait!

This story is fast-paced and contains memorable characters. Perhaps the biggest draw-back is the lack of originality within the vampire world. Many of the characters are straight from White Wolf games and popular vampire movies (but hey, they don't sparkle, Smith gets bonus points just for that) but the characters are well-developed and logical. However, it is still a great read, not too mushy or including too many love scenes (which works well for me). A good read for vampire lovers.
