I really enjoyed this book - the writing style is tight and the story moves along quickly. It is a lovely intertwining of the past and present through the main character's exploration of journals her great grandmother wrote in the late 1800's. Set in New Mexico I now have a hankering to make my next destination that part of the country so that I may see first hand the beauty of the landscape and walk the streets captured in the book. There are several love stories here - both in the past and the present, and I was reminded again about how much we can learn about ourselves from those who have come before. Excellent book - highly recommended!

Great story! You can tell Ms Crook really does her research. It's a very good women's tale. Great historical story, great love story and very good mystery as well. One of the best I have read in a while.

I'd not read any of Ms. Crook's books previously, and thoroughly enjoyed this one. Beautifully crafted, well-told story, descriptions of scenery that placed one right there. The struggles of women in several generations and how they reconcile their differences (or don't) is wonderfully told.

A fantastically written tale of the lives of three generations of very strong women in the southwestern frontier whose lives are totally centered around the eldest and her journals. It's mystical, mesmerizing and mysterious, with lots of plots and turns, and very hard to put down. I highly recommend it.

I almost stopped reading this because of a dislike of one of the characters but perservered. Am glad I continued as the story got much better even though some of the plot twists were rather transparent. It was an enjoyable enough read.
