Never understood why there was this cover since it is not at all indicative of the storyline. This was a very good story, also Jerott is excellent telling it.
While searching for her family, photojournalist Annie Beckett finds information about a soldier who disappeared during the 1832 Black Hawk War. In search of the soldier's story, she goes to Wisconsin to Rik Magnusson's farm. Antisocial Rik reluctantly agrees to rent Annie a room in his farmhouse. They are attracted to each other, but neither of them wants to start something that they know will end when Annie is done writing her book.
Though the romance between Rik and Annie was interesting, I found the secondary story of Lt. Lewis Hudson more compelling...even if it was only told through letters at the beginning of every chapter. I'd never heard of the little-known Black Hawk War until I read this story. The author says a historical marker commemorating the Battle of Wisconsin Heights gave her the idea for the story. My rating: 3.5 Stars.
A pet peeve of mine is the cover art not matching the story. This one is really off the charts. While the story takes place at a dairy farm in Wisconsin, and Rik is said to be a tall blonde farmer, the cover shows a dark haired man embracing a woman. The pair both look like they are dressed for a night on the town...not ready to milk cows.
