Sometimes I wonder what happened to all the precious jewels and metals which are often stolen in Doherty's novels. Were they all melted down and became the "mandatory gold chains" that men once wore around their necks during part of the last century, and which seem to be coming back? (God, I hope not!)

And then there are the holy relics. It's a good business to get into. For example, I have for sale two of Jesus' baby teeth. Either of which cures insomnia, colic or Covid, and protects you from income tax audits. But don't contact me unless you're talking big bucks.

Still, Doherty's novels are intriguing, but I don't think I'd want to live in the world he describes.
