I read a lot of historical mysteries and enjoy most of them. However, this one has to be one of my favorites. There is so much 1850s American history expertly woven into the story line that I hated to finish the book.
As with the first book in this series, the characters are all well developed and seem real. The theme about which the plot revolves is the Fugitive Slave Law and the many people affected by it. Murders have occurred in Seneca Falls and the decade-old deaths of two fleeing slaves seems to be the cause of them.
While much of the action still takes place in Seneca Falls, our heroine travels to Richmond to witness the trial of a Seneca Falls boy charged with helping a slave to escape. This is also a major portion of the books.
So many historical characters play either significant roles or cameos in this book that I began to lose count. Still, all of them were credibly woven into the plot. All the African-American roles were tastefully done with none of them playing clownish characters that are all too common in many other books of this period.
Meanwhile, our heroine's love life becomes even more complicated. And is there another suitor standing by?
