Nora Roberts like to get into a lot of detail. This book really makes you believe that you are in Alaska. A shieff from the lower 48 comes to find himself and solve an 14 year old murder.

I live in Alaska, so I was prepared to be unimpressed by a 'cheechako's' portrayal of life here--in spite of the fact that it's Nora Roberts and I love nearly everything she's ever written. I was pleasantly surprised, however; she clearly did her research, and she describes Alaska and our unique outlook on life very accurately.

I also love the heroine--I kept thinking of the character Maggie (Janine Turner) from Northern Exposure...and yes, Alaskans really do love their dogs that much! :)

I really enjoyed this book, Nora has not disappointed me yet. I was a little skeptical of this one, waiting to say "Ha! that is not true to form!" since I am a lifelong Alaskan, but I never felt the need to say that, I just enjoyed it.

This is one of Nora's best. There's lots of humor. For example, the story takes place in Lunacy, Alaska. The locals are referred to as "lunatics." There's also a good love story and healthy dose of romance. It becomes a mystery, too, when some strange things begin happening around town.

A cop from the big city decides to relocate to Alaska. He brings alot of baggage with him, but one of Lunacy's local gals catches his attention. She's a bush pilot and falls for him, as well.

A movie was made out of the book. While it's enjoyable, the movie doesn't really do the book justice. If you enjoyed the movie, I'd still encourage you to read the book.

Still reeling from the death of his partner, Officer Nate Burke takes a job as sheriff of a small town in Alaska. Nate soon meets the colorful town's people, including Charlene, a serious man-eater who runs the town's only hotel, and her daughter Meg, a sexy pilot. Nate and Meg are soon drawn together when three college students go missing while mountain climbing. While the boys are soon found alive, Nate gets a big surprise when a frozen body was also found with an ax in chest.

I wasn't expecting this book to be so good. The descriptions of Alaska and the town's people are so real, you feel like you're there with them. Great story!

Pretty Good storyline for Nora Roberts/"twisted mystery" fans. Interesting premise begins with a "lost parent" on the slippery slopes of the Alaskan "tundra". A lifetime of regret and misunderstandings for those "left behind" makes up the "back story". The heroine is a competent "Bush Pilot"; the Hero, a even more competent "Lawman". There is LOVE and ROMANCE of course, but the most interesting part of this tale is the "mystery TWIST" at the end. The "TWIST" is very well crafted and very unexpected!

If you're a fan of Nora Roberts, you'll like this one! If you think you've already read all the "best ones" and her work is beginning to read as "also ran", this one will shake you up a bit, as the writing is much better than most, regardless of genre.

If you like an "interesting story" and are able to "get past" the LOVE and ROMANCE of traditional ROMANCE Genres, this one makes for a good read!

This was the first Nora Roberts book I'd ever read and I enjoyed it very much. The author did a very good job with her characters and the setting. Lunacy sounded like a wonderful place to visit. There's a little romance but it isn't overdone and a great murder mystery that made it very hard to put it down. There's lots of suspense and I didn't know who the killer was until the very end. Highly recommend!

Like most of her books, I found this a fun, fast and enjoyable read. I really enjoyed the mix of romance and mystery that Roberts does so well. I even had to break my rule of saving my books for my commute and read this one instead of going to bed. I wanted to have the answers and couldn't put it down until it was done. If you're Nora Roberts fan or enjoy a good light mystery, I recomend this one.

I really enjoyed this story, even though the heroine was a bit more rough edged than I usually like. But it worked in this story, and I found myself liking Meg regardless of any preconceived ideas. Very good story, one that I will likely keep for a while and re-read a few times before I send it on.

This was a fun beach read. Nate Burke, a depressed, burned-out cop from Baltimore accepts a job as the police chief in Lunacy, Alaska. Of course, he falls head over heels for the pretty local bush pilot (the love at first sight part was the only part of the book that I thought was a little over the top). I loved all the characters in the town of Lunacy and the mystery of who killed Pat Galloway 16 years ago kept me guessing right up until the very end.

Roberts shines again with a nuanced tale of the Alaskan wilderness and the appealing eccentries who cluster there ... A richly textured novel that captures the intamacy of small-town police work, the prickliness of the pioneer spirit, and the paradox of a setting at once intimate and expansive, welcoming hostile, indisputably American and yet profoundly exotic to those in the Lower 48 ... Publishers Weekly ... I have yet to be disappointed with Roberts... This is a must for any Roberts fan ...

"Northern Lights" was a good story set in Alaska. Ms. Robert's described it beautifully. The murder mystery was interesting and kept me wanting to read more. I loved the references to Star Wars ... not a topic I expected to see! I found every character to be plausible, and enjoyed everyone of them. I had a few characters on my list of who-done-it and was completely wrong... didn't even suspect the real murderer, so that was fun!

Lunancy was Nate's last chance. As a Baltimore cop he watched his partner die on the street- and the guilt still haunts him. With nowhere else to go, he accepts the job as chief of police in this tiny, remote Alaskan town, where the peace provides a balm for his shattered soul- and an unexpected affair with pilot Meg Galloway warms his nights....
But other things in Lunancy are heating up. Nate suspects the killer in an unsolved murder still walks the snowy streets. His investigation will unearth the secrets and suspitions that lurk beneath the placid surface, as well as bring out the big- city survival instincts that made him a cop in the first place. And his discovery will threaten the new life- and the new love- that he has finally found for himself.

Police officer running from the loss of his partner and a failed marriage takes refuge in aptly named Lunacy, Alaska. While he'd hoped to freeze his sorrows, he finds his heart thawing due to the independent, headstrong pilot Meg Galloway. A murder (or maybe a few) later, there's more at stake than just frostbite and romance. Quirky cast of characters, interesting (and unusual) setting, and good blend of romance and mystery make this a good read.

Great characterizations, very good plot, but I wasn't convinced by the Alaskan setting. We're asked to believe that a town of 506 people has a full-time police chief and two full-time deputies. I live in a town of 1000 people and we have a part-time police chief and 1-2 deputies in name only so that they can do traffic duty when needed. It's also highly unlikely that a town of 506 people could economically support both a newspaper and a radio station.

Roberts shines again with a nuanced tale of the Alaskan wilderness and the appealing eccentrics who cluster there. Former Baltimore cop Nate Burke accepts the unlikely post of police chief of Lunacy, Alaska (pop. 506), to stave off the depression caused by divorce and the traumatic death of his partner, for which he holds himself partly responsible. His early days in the close-knit town are quiet except for minor disturbances and a dalliance with a feisty bush pilot, Meg Galloway. Then Meg's father, who disappeared 16 years before, is found frozen in a remote mountain cave, an ice ax in his chest. The discovery that Pat Galloway was murderedmost likely by a localshakes up the town and drives his murderer to commit a second, cover-up killing. Though state authorities dismiss that death as suicide, Nate pursues it as a crimea decision that puts him at odds with many outspoken Lunatics, as the townspeople call themselves. With quiet inexorability he fields the flak, uncovers long-forgotten events and finds a tough but loving balance with the fiercely independent Meg. Though billed as romantic suspense, the novel forsakes artificial genre conventions in favor of a wry, affectionate look at community bonds, generational wounds and soul-testing landscapes. The result is a richly textured novel that captures the intimacy of smalltown police work, the prickliness of the pioneer spirit and the paradox of a setting at once intimate and expansive, welcoming and hostile, indisputably American and yet profoundly exotic to those in the Lower 48.

Lunacy was Nate Burke's last chance. As a Baltimore cop, he'd watched his partner die on the street-and the guilt still haunts him. With nowhere else to go, he accepts the job as Chief of Police in this tiny, remote Alaskan town. Aside from sorting out a run-in between a couple of motor vehicles and a moose, he finds his first weeks on the job are relatively quiet. But just as he wonders whether this has been all a big mistake, an unexpected kiss on New Year's Eve under the brilliant Northern Lights of the Alaska sky lifts his spirit and convinces him to stay just a little longer.

Meg Galloway, born and raised in Lunacy, is used to being alone. She was a young girl when her father disappeared, and she has learned to be independent, flying her small plane, living on the outskirts of town with just her huskies for company. After her New Year's kiss with the Chief of Police, she allows herself to give in to passion-while remaining determined to keep things as simple as possible. But there's something about Nate's sad eyes that gets under her skin and warms her frozen heart.

And now, things in Lunacy are heating up. Years ago, on one of the majestic mountains shadowing the town, a crime occurred that is unsolved to this day-and Nate suspects that a killer still walks the snowy streets. His investigation will unearth the secrets and suspicions that lurk beneath the placid surface, as well as bring out the big-city survival instincts that made him a cop in the first place. And his discovery will threaten the new life-and the new love-that he has finally found for himself.

From Publishers Weekly

Nate Burke is a distraught cop who lost his partner in the line of duty and is barely holding himself together. He decides to move to Lunancy Alaska and accept a job as Police Chief as there is not much crime there. Little does he know that the ice is about to crack and the Lunancy is about to hit the fan.

Without a doubt, one of the best Nora Roberts has EVER written. Baltimore Detective, Nate Burke's partner is killed in a dark alleyway. He can't stop blaming himself, and can't get back "into" his job in Baltimore. When he sees a job posting for the Chief of Police in Lunacy, Alaska, he applies and is chosen to guard the town of 700 people and a few wild moose.

He finds that the mundane tasks of breaking up bar fights and finding out who broke out the school windows are just what he needed until a body is discovered in an ice cave on a mountain. Though the murder took place 16 years prior, Nate believes the murderer is alive and well and one of the Lunatics he's sworn to protect.

With 637 pages, it's not a quick read, but, as I said, one of if not her best work. I would LOVE a sequel to this one!

Lunacy is Nate Burke's last chance. As a Baltimore cop, he watched his partner die - and the guilt still haunts him. Maybe serving as chief of police in this tiny, remote town, where darkness falls by midafternoon and temperatures plunge to zero and below, will bring some kind of solace. It isn't as if he had anywhere else to go.
Aside from sorting out a run-in between a couple of motor vehicles and a moose - and pulling apart two brothers who are beating each other silly over a disagreement about John Wayne - Nate's first weeks on the job are relatively quiet. But as he wonders whether this was all a big mistake, an unexpected kiss on New Year's Eve under the brilliant northern lights of the Alaska sky lifts his sprit - and convinces him to stay just a little longer.

But after her New Year's kiss with the chief of police, she allows herself to give in to passion. She doesn't want commitment-yet there's something about Nate's sad eyes that gets under her skin, and warms her frozen heart.
And now, things in Lunacy are heating up. I read NORTHERN LIGHTS for the February 2015 "Nora Roberts" theme in my online book club, The Reading Cove.

It started out pretty well and I liked the Nate character, his background and the circumstances surrounding his move to Lunacy, Alaska. We get to experience the setting with him, which basically becomes a character in and of itself. Loved the description of the Northern Lights!

However, the book was overly long, the plot wore pretty thin and I lost interest after the halfway mark. The cleverness of Lunacy residents being called Lunatics, the town paper, etc. and the heroine, Meg, who really felt overdone with her one-liners and been-there-done-that attitude. It was all cute the first 200 pages, but I felt it went on too long and even the murder mystery plot line got old for me.

Overall, I give Northern Lights a C+, but I'd still recommend it for the experience of its setting.

I was really looking forward to reading this book as the description was very appealing. However, I only read a few pages and was very disappointed with the language. Just in those few pages there were multiple f-, s-, and the most offensive of all - taking the Lord's name in vain. I simply don't understand the need for this kind of language in books. It ruins them for me. I've looked forward to reading lots of books and then chosen not to because of the vulgarity and misuse of the Lord's name.
