I know, I know. Almost everyone has already read this little book, but I needed a quick read and, although I knew the plot b/c of the film, I was still struck by the heart-wrenching narrative, especially toward the end. As usual with a Sparks book, I even shed a few tears. Took me about 4 hours to read, maybe less.

In 1932, two North Carolina teenagers from opposite sides of the tracks fall in love. Spending one idyllic summer together in the small town of New Bern, Noah Calhoun and Allie Nelson do not meet again for 14 years. Noah has returned from WWII to restore the house of his dreams, having inherited a large sum of money. Allie, programmed by family and the "caste system of the South" to marry an ambitious, prosperous man, has become engaged to powerful attorney Lon Hammond. When she reads a newspaper story about Noah's restoration project, she shows up on his porch step, re-entering his life for two days. Will Allie leave Lon for Noah? The book's slim dimensions and cliche-ridden prose will make comparisons to The Bridges of Madison County inevitable. What renders Sparks's (Wokini: A Lakota Journey of Happiness and Self-Understanding) sentimental story somewhat distinctive are two chapters, which take place in a nursing home in the '90s, that frame the central story. The first sets the stage for the reading of the eponymous notebook, while the later one takes the characters into the land beyond happily ever after, a future rarely examined in books of this nature. Early on, Noah claims that theirs may be either a tragedy or a love story, depending on the perspective. Ultimately, the judgment is up to readers?be they cynics or romantics. For the latter, this will be a weeper.

This is an older book, but if you read one great book this year-let this be the one. Good things come in small packages. A short novel of excellent quality. This was made into a movie-but as always, the book is better. A celebration of passion. An enduring love. This one will make you cry. A book you will not forget.....ever. This is one of those books that you must read before you die. Don't be fooled into thinking this is a standard romance, because it is not. A must read for everyone, regardless of what type of book you enjoy.

I'm not usually a fan of books that jump around in time, but this one is an exception. The leaps from present-day into memory take the reader on an incredible journey into life and love.

I absolutely loved this book! I was turned on to Nicholas Sparks books when I read Message in a Bottle, I now own every book by this author. His writing hits you right where you can feel it the most.
Grab your tissues as you take the journey of Allie and Noah, and the destiny of love.

OMG This has to be the most wonderful love story EVER to be written! I cried, I laughed, I was jealous, I was angry! It Is about unconditional love in all it's glory. I feel like this is the dream when you think about how you want to be loved! If you haven't read it, READ IT!!!

Nicholas Sparks really touches the heart. I liked this book about a loving, lasting relationship from the perspective of an elderly man whose wife suffers from Alzheimer's disease.

This was my first Nicholas Sparks book, so I didn't know to expect the schmaltz, sentimentality, and plain improbability and predictability of the plot that apparently are hallmarks of his writing. This was nothing more than a Harlequin romance souped up with a fancy cover. I was mad that I finished it because it was so darn cheesy and hokey. I didn't care a whit for the characters and knew from the beginning they'd be together at the end.

All the women I know "looooooove Nicholas Sparks!" but I fail to see the allure. If all his books are as lame as this one, I do not want to read any more. Barf.

I must be the only person on the planet who didn't care for this book. A big portion of the story was set in 1946 & a lot of what I read just didn't seem consistant for that era which I guess distracted me from the characters. I also don't much care for a storyline that jumps around in time. No tears here but I was touched by the ending.

I read this book on a flight back home from visiting my grandparents. I read the entire book on the flight. It was such an amazing story. It brought tears to my eyes. The book was so well written. Without saying too much, if you've ever had to deal with long-term illness, this book really hits it on the nail.

At 31 Noah Chalhoun, back in coastal North Carolina after WWII is haunted by images of the girl he lost more than a decade earlier. At 29, socialite Allie Nelson is about to marry a wealthy lawyer, but she cannot stop thinking about the boy who long ago stole her heart. I loved the movie so I decided to read the book. As much as I wish I could say that I loved it as well, it just isn't the case. I found the book at times painful to read, not because of the story line, but because of how it drug on. I was really disappointed in this book.

"Somewhere," muses Noah Calhoun, while sitting on his porch in the moonight, "there were people making love." Anyway, head elsewhere for Great Literature, but if you're in the market to get your heartstrings plucked, look no further. The Notebook, a Southern-fried story of love-lost-and-found-again, revolves around a single time-honored romantic dilemma: will beautiful Allison Nelson stay with Mr. Respectability (to whom she happens to be engaged), or will she hook up with Noah, the romantic rascal she left so many years ago? We're not telling, but you have two guesses and the first one doesn't count. Decades later, after Allison develops Alzheimer's, her beau uses "the notebook" to read her the story of the great love she's plumb forgot.

I admit to this being one of the best novels I have read in a long time. (In my opinion the movie does not do it justice.) Of course the plot is emotionally moving; yet, thee auther's writing is fantastic. for isntance; two lines: 1)"The romantics would call it a love story, the cynics would call it a tragedy. In my mind it's a little of both, and no matter how you choose to to view it in the end, it does not change the fact that it involves a great deal of my life and the path i've chosen to follow. I have no complaints .....", (3) 2) I walk on tiled floors, white in color and speckled wiht gray. Like my hair and the hair of most people here, though I'm the only only one in the hallway this morning ..... " (3)

In the part of Florida where I lived it's common for there to be a summer rainstorm with very few clouds in the sky and the sunshine still streaming down. Reading the end of this book reminded me of that because though there were tears in my eyes the feelings were mostly happiness and the appreciation of the beauty discovered and shared rather than of the sorrow that served to accentuate that beauty.

This is an idealized story of love discovered and shared. It's the quintessential romance novel and is worthy of all the acclaim that its garnered. While many would cite this as the epitome of "chick-lit", it's written by a man and told almost exclusively from a man's point of view.

This is a wonderful read and I'd recommend it to everyone. After reading the book I decided that it was time to dig up my copy of the DVD and re-watch the movie version which does respectable job of telling this story. Only now can I fully appreciate the irony of the packaging. Enclosed with the DVD is not the usual flyer for other movies by the same company, but a $1 off coupon for Kleenex tissues.

A fine idea that just turned into so much space-filling treacle. It seems the author had a quota of pages to fill for the publisher. I detected little effort on the author's part to tie the two phases of the book together emotionally or stylistically. There were some interesting notions about the specifics of Alzheimer's, but then of course we had to have a "miracle" in the husband's ability to beat the doctors at their game. Sheesh. This is a book that should have gone right to screenplay. I have a feeling the movie is an effective tearjerker.

I am not ashamed at all to say I enjoyed Nicholas Sparks' wonderful book, "The Notebook", and its equally-impressive movie version. The tale is simple and classic, about young love, loss, reignition, and tragedy, and all readers are able to connect. Men who wish not to read this novel are punishing themselves - told from the man's point of view, this book is highly relatable to males of all mature ages. I do recommend this book, especially if you're looking for a quick read that isn't mindless. Also, keep the tissues handy, especially if you're easily saddened - this book will force tears out of you even if you don't want them to come!

I am not a Nicholas Sparks fan. I just saw the movie about a year ago on TV and fell IN LOVE with this story. It hit so close to home for me because my grandfather died in 2009 from alzheimers. And the love story and time period in which the main story takes place. Well I went and rented the DVD and watched it with the comentary. This story was based on a real couple! I had to read the book! So I got it and read it in a day and a half. Well this was the only time I can ever remember liking the movie more than a book. And reminded me why I am not a fan of this author. Don't waste your time, see the movie. The only reason why I gave it a 3 is bc of the movie.

I always thought that this was a romance between young people and so it sat on my shelf until I was in the right mood for that kind of book. It sat there for quite some time until, recently, I felt the need for a change in genre and decided to pick it up. I couldn't put it down--it mesmerized me. The story is a romance between young people, but it's so much more than that. It's a true love story--not just a story about true love, but a story that defines love, clarifies it and shows the enduring power of it. This book is about love, faith, trust, hope and miracles. I loved it.

I don't know that there is anyone out there who hasn't already read this book, but, just in case, I'm going to try and avoid any spoilers. This story touched me so deeply that I'm more inclined to write about my emotions than the substance of the book itself. In some places, I felt my heart warm and happiness bloom inside me. In others, I cried so hard I had to stop reading because I couldn't read the words anymore. I didn't expect to feel this way over a story--not many stories have touched me this deeply--but I can't say enough about how much I loved it.

The Notebook was, in short, amazing. It made me feel and believe and wish and hope and dream. I realize now that I have this love in my life and I can only hope it continues to grow and sustain. Love won't be denied and it can create miracles.

This is very much like the movie, beautifully told.

This particular book is in a larger print, and one corner has been bent/worn off (not sure how as the book was given to me this way), but it did not at all affect the ability to read the pages.

This story definitely was a tear jerker. Such a lovely story of young love that is meant to surpass unlimited lifetimes.

You also appreciate the love letters they write to each other. Before emails and techology, hand written letters are still the ultimate gesture of true love.

I expected this book to be better than it was, especially after all the great reviews it listed on the inside. I was very disappointed. The book needed to have more written of when Noah and Allie were young, while still keeping everything that was already included in the book.

THE NOTEBOOK is the romance novel of this generation!

Ali and Noah are two very different people, or characters, depending on how you think about it. Ali is from a wealthy family that thinks very highly of themselves, and Noah was raised by his father and has had to work for every penny he has. Which is not much. The characters come alive and it is almost like you personally know both of them. It's amazing! Ali takes a vacation to New Bern where Noah lives. As the summer progresses, their relationship grows stronger and stronger and they fall in love. They fight all the time, but for some crazy reason they are madly in love.

Then the summer ends.

Noah and Ali are devastated that she has to leave. Her parents won't let her stay because they think that she is too good for him. It's absolutely devastating. He writes her letters, which she never receives because her mother intercepts and keeps them. She thinks that Noah has forgotten her.

Then World War II begins.

Noah is deployed for a couple of years and comes home when the war is over. During this time, Ali gets engaged to Lon, a lawyer who her parents approve of because he is socially acceptable. Noah buys an old plantation and fixes it up, and he and the house wind up in the newspaper. So Ali decides that she needs to go see Noah before she gets married, even though she hasn't seen him in fourteen years. At their reunion, they realize that they never fell out of love.

Read the book to find out who Ali chooses, Noah or Lon!

This is a really good love story about a guy named Noah and a girl name Allie. They both come from very different backgrounds one from a wealthy family and the other from a poor family.

They meet and fall in love but there is some opposition from Allie's family, and their love is tested when Allie's family moves away.

I won't give the ending away but the book was very good, and the movie was pretty good too.

I usually don't like romances but this one is one of those exceptions for me. Written with lyrical beauty, the story of two lovers who lose each other, then find each other again, is so sweet, it touched my heart. Since they're not always shown jumping in and out of bed, the love they have for each other really shines through. The ending is bittersweet - I almost cried - but is the perfect ending for this book and for these 2 characters. Definitely recommend! Plus it's a short read!

"The Notebook" is one of the most beautiful stories ever written. What James Patterson did for thrillers Nicholas Sparks does for romance: he elevates it, drenching it with a richness unfathomable. I cannot believe that this story is fiction; it is so good that it has to be true. True love is real.

What a heart-warming story of love that endures all. It is so poetic and the type of love every woman dreams of. It is tender as this couples relationship matures with time and they share their life with children and each other. The passion is stilled by the deeper love and devotion that meshes these characters. The sadness is only comes as the reader witnesses the ravages of time, age and illness as it takes it tolls on the female character, but we are reminded love still lives in this couples heart as they face one challenge after another in order to remain together. It makes me cry thinking of this story. It is as beautiful as it poignant. Nicholas Sparks has a real gift for writing a story so real and believable you might know someone just like Noah and Allie. I fear the movie doesn't do the story justice. It is a must read for those who believe love still conquers all.

Good book. Met Nicholas Sparks at a book signing and he stated that his books are not romance novels as they don't always end "happily ever after". Anyway I enjoy his books.

This one of the most moving books of 1996 and its 2004 movie made this book a fast number one romance of 2005. You won't be able to put it down until you have finished it from cover to end. This is the first book of a series for Nicholas Sparks with The Wedding to follow. I highly recommend this for anyone wanting a deep touching love story that really inspires you to reach out to those you love.

This story is awesome. It's different from the movie in a few places, but clears up other things that happen. I read it in about 2 days because it really is a smooth read. Nicholas Sparks must be a Christian, but he does get into the sex scene a bit.

Most of the time the book is better than the movie. I often wonder if the order in which you indulge sways your judgement one way or the other. The movie the notebook, is an amazing movie, one of the best love stories, in my opinion ever told. I expected the book to be better. The beginning, the courtship and early on in their relationship is cut somewhat short in this book. However, the book is still a masterpiece in it's own way. It is still great, just in some different way. It is definitely worth the read.

I loved this story. It began when the two people were young and mistakes were made. The woman is about to be married and remembers her first love. She wants to see if the love she felt was true as the memory. The story goes on until the two of them are in a nursing home and the devotion continues. A beautiful love story which demonstrates the destruction of Alzhiemers Tears were always welling up in my eyes.

This is a wonderful love story. But, if you have already seen the movie, then the book won't grab you the same way. You have to be able to read this, without knowing how it ends. So, read this before you watch the movie.

"That's my sweetheart in there. Wherever she is, that's where my home is." "The Notebook" by Nicholas Sparks is a strong loving book. I would recommend it to anyone who wants a good love book. Noah Calhoun was a young man in love, who got his heart stolen by Allie Hamilton. Even though the love they both shared couldn't last forever, Noah tried everything he could to keep Allie his. Many things came across them that made it hard for them to continue loving each other. Allie had to move away and they both found new people they both loved. Both of their lives changes a lot, but nothing can separate the love they both have for each other. Will the share the rest of their lives together? Or will Noah and Allie not get back together? You will just have to read the book to find out.

I really just didn't like it. I have never seen the movie. It was overly idealistic and the characters were cheesy and one dimensional. I know I know I know.. soo many people adore this book and author. I just don't get it. I will read one more of his books to see if this story just wasn't for me.

SPOILER ALERT - DO NOT READ IF YOU DON'T WANT TO HAVE SOME HINTS ON PLOT!!!

I did not like this book. I do not want to add spoilers here, but will just say that enjoying a love story, and the subsequent years of happiness, only to be smacked in the face with end of life illness is totally unsexy and not at all entertaining. I am all for books about hardships and difficulties, drama and overcoming adversity, etc., but this story seemed to totally negate the many years of happiness for a few years of hardship.
