For what it was, The Nymph King was an entertaining read but the heroine bordered on irritating through most of the book. Valerian was your typical sexy alpha male who knew all women wanted him, except our heroine, at first, so watching him try to rationalize why Shaye didn't fall under his spell was fun. The lore associated with the Nymph's was fascinating and the secondary characters were great. Overall, it kept me occupied. My only complaint was the heroine. The lady protested way too much and nearly sucked the fun out of the story.

Arrogant, sensual male meets cynical, hardboiled female and gets the shock of his millenniums old life....she wants nothing to do with him. Add in a challenge for the woman by one of his warriors, a sea god who is VERY vexed with the nymphs (kill them all!) and a war with the dragons to regain the nymph women and keep the captured castle and you have enough action to up the tension in the adventure side of this book. It goes without saying that sensual tension is there from the first few pages. Funny in places and nice character development occurs for the hero, heroine and some others.

This is pretty much the second strictly romance novel I've read in my life, but it's probably one that's going to set the standard for all other paranormal romances. I couldn't put it down, so enthralled was I with Valerian and Shaye's relationship, which was sexy, funny, and completely memorable. The ending felt perhaps a bit rushed due to its neatness and tie-in with earlier books in the series, but all in all, I was satisfied, and will most definitely be picking up Gena Showalter's books for future romance reads.

I usually really love Showalter, but this one is bad. The writing is sloppy and the leads are annoying.
