This is, without a doubt, one of the best books that Dean Koontz has ever written. I was moved to tears reading it. I have been reading Koontz on and off since the early 90's, and haven't been impressed with much that he's done in the last decade. This books reveals a new, improved Koontz. I couldn't put it down, and for the first time in a long time, I felt like the relationship between the main characters worked. It still has that trademark Koontz humor and quirkiness, but it's the intensity is more subtle and heartfelt. This is not one to miss.

I had almost given up on Koontz. A friend recommended this book based on my love of the subject matter and I am so glad she did!! The story could have been taken in so many unnatural directions or given a hokey ending (if written by any other "horror" writer), but it starts strong and stays that way through the end. I swallowed it whole, finishing it in about 4 hours. I adore this book!

Wow! What a way to start a new year. This is the first book I've read by Dean Koontz and I'm kicking myself in the behind for overlooking the man for some many years! After this review, I will make it a point to get my hands on a copy of everything the man has ever written.

I first mentioned this book to my husband after coming across it in the bookstore early December. Back cover seemed interesting enough but, not being a fan of Koontz, I decided to put it on my "wish list". A few days later, my husband handed me the book (God Bless The Man! *grin)and with the first words ("My name is Odd Thomas...") - I was hooked!

There are no simple words to describe this book - it is a literary masterpiece. There were times when I forgot that I was reading a book and felt as if I were reading a memoir of sorts (in fact, it is from this view that Odd presents his story to the reader). You not only get to know each of the different characters Odd encounters in his life (each unique in their own ways) but you begin to care about what happens to these people. Many times I held my breath, struggling to keep my eyes from leaping to the paragraph below to see what fate awaited a member of Odd's "family".

I've read some pretty good books in '04 but one of my biggest complaints have been that the books start off very well but I find myself rushing through the ending. I clung to every word in this book, sometimes stopping to savor a particular phrase delivered by the narrator. And the ending delivered! Man, the writing is nothing less than awesome! So simplistic and yet so genius!

Hats off to Mr. Dean Koontz for a magnificent job!

Had heard this was a good read - and yes, the story was very compelling and the main character actually named Odd was sweet. Of course, it is typical Dean Koontz so you have to suspend disbelief and reality with the first page. It won't disappoint you.

This was, for me, an incredible read; thrilling; it held me in its grip. Paranormal is not a genre I usually read, but Dean Koontz changed all that for me. This book has to be one of Koontzs most challenging endeavors. Odd Thomasyes, his name is really Oddis gifted with an unusual ability to see the dead who have lingered too long in this world. Sometimes they seek him out, but always he is driven by their need to communicate even though they cannot talk. The character Odd Thomas is complex in his simplicity and as the narrator of the story his language skills make description an art form. To quote Publishers Weekly: Marvelousthis is Koontz working at his pinnacle. Loved it!

Odd Thomas is actually about a guy named Odd... and, well, he has the "odd" ability to communicate with the dead who are stuck here on earth for some reason. Although the dead can't talk to Odd, they lead him to help solve their problems. Odd takes on this job very willingly with the feeling that it is his duty to help since he was given this strange gift. This first book in the series has Odd trying to prevent an aspiring mass murderer from committing his deed. Memorable character. Sparse, conversational type of writing, but a page-turner with twists and turns in plot.

20 year old Odd has an ability to see ghosts and wispy black things that hover in anticipation of death. Not many people know of his strange abilities, but he has trusted the police chief, who loves him as a son, and his girlfriend, Stormy, with his secrets. The harbingers of death are swarming in his town and he feels the need to stop whatever destruction is coming. This was a very loveable character in this fast moving story, and I cannot wait to read more of the Odd books on my TBR pile!

This is the book that really got me started reading Koontz. The main character is interesting, the other characters are fleshed out and are a part of the story, and of course the premise and follow through maintain your interest. So if you are interested in a well written "ghost" story then this is a good one. Note this is not a ghost story per se, except for Elvis, the evil spirits aren't people. I don't know the timelines on this, did "Dead like me" come first or this. Some of these have a similar theme so who had the original idea and who expanded/improved on it is really something I don't care about since the good ones are just that - good and to be enjoyed.

I do have a problem with authors/movies merely recycling there heroes and not being creative and doing something new. With "Odd Thomas" the second book was readable again while the third killed me off of ever buying another sequel or prequel to this.

I didn't really like this book. The writing style was a bit slow for me, from all I'd heard of Koontz, I expected more action, more suspense, more something. All I got was more desire for the darn book to END. Then, when it did, I wanted to throw it across the room (unfortunately I was at work--in a school, and couldn't). It was frustrating, sad, and not worth my time.

There are very few booths that can take a ghost haunting a person and turn it into a funny story. That is the case with Odd I actually laughed out loud at some points. A riveting read from start to finish.

One of my all-time favorites by Koontz. Odd Thomas, a nondescript short-order cook at the Pico Mundo Grill, is an unlikely hero with a gift. Odd's charming self-effacing humor is engaging and the dialog throughout the book is cleverly written. The contrast between Odd's honesty and purity and the evil he often faces was dramatically defined. Odd Thomas is an impressive introduction to a remarkable character and well worth the read. Odd's character is so palpable, I never wanted the book to end!

If you are not already a fan of Dean Koontz, you will be soon. His books are thoughtful, well constructed, intelligent, with likable characters and unexpected twists.

Odd Thomas is no exception. Probably one of his most likable characters to date, and that is saying a lot. Although I enjoyed the book from the beginning, I don't think I became emotionally invested until somewhere in the middle. It creeps up on you. Then all of a sudden you find yourself scared that something bad will happen to Odd, or to one of his friends.

I can't really comment too much on this book without giving something away, which I abhor doing. Once again Koontz takes us out of the mainstream, and makes up his own rules along the way. Read it for yourself, but make sure you have the other 2 books ready to jump into when you are done.

Odd Thomas, who narrates, is odd indeed: only 20, he works contentedly as a fry cook in a small fictional California town, despite a talent for writing. The reason for his lack of ambition? A much rarer talent: Odd sees and converses with ghosts, the lingering dead who have yet to pass on, a secret he has kept from nearly everyone but his girlfriend, an eccentric author friend and the local police chief, whom he occasionally helps solve terrible crimes. Odd also has the ability to see bodachs, malevolent spirits that feast on pain and whose presence signifies a likelihood of imminent violence. The proximity of bodachs to a weird-looking stranger in town, whom Odd dubs "Fungus Man," alerts Odd that trouble is brewing; breaking into Fungus Man's house, Odd discovers not only hundreds of bodachs but a shrine to serial killers that helps him deduce that somehow Fungus Man will wreak widespread havoc very soon-so Odd is caught in a classic race against time to deter catastrophe. As with Koontz's best novels, this one features electrifying tension and suspense, plus a few walloping surprises. But Koontz fans know that the author has recently added humor to his arsenal of effects, and this thriller also stands out for its brilliant tightrope walk between the amusing and the macabre; one of the dead with whom Odd interacts frequently, for instance, is Elvis, still pining for his long-dead mother, Gladys. Above all, the story, like most great stories, runs on character-and here Koontz has created a hero whose honest, humble voice will resonate with many. In some recent books, Koontz has tended to overwrite, but not here: the narrative is as simple and clear as a newborn's gaze. This is Koontz working at his pinnacle, providing terrific entertainment that deals seriously with some of the deepest themes of human existence: the nature of evil, the grip of fate and the power of love.

Odd Thomas is a very engaging and page turning book. Odd Thomas is a recluse interesting young man, that works at a local diner in town. He is a simple man, wears the same thing every day, like things in a certain pattern and loves his girlfriend. Odd also has a gift, he sees the dead and helps them cross over. When Odd's day starts he sees a you girl, and she leads him to her killer. Odd confronts the killer and the day starts rolling! Um Yuck! I have never read a Dean Koontz, nor will I ever again. It sounded right up my alley, kinda other worldly but this book was boring.

Every time it started to take off the author would reign it in and drag you through a totally different story line that seemed to have nothing to do with the action of the book, and in the long run didn't. So you read pages and pages of just story that doesn't answer any questions.

On top of that I felt that he wrote in a "bloated" fashion. Trying to sound smarter than he really is...

And lastly and most annoyingly, any and all questions he posed were not, i repeat NOT answered. And let me tell you there were quite a few of them.

I did discover that this is the first in a series. I will not be reading any more even if they answered all the unanswered questions in the first.

Having already read both book 2 and book 3 of this series - both very good, by the way - I knew the fate of the characters, but still found myself wrapped up in the lives of Odd Thomas, Teri, Stormy, Chief Porter, and Little Ozzie and his cat.

The ending was surprising and not something I could have seen coming. I can't wait to continue my reading of the series.

I've neveer thought of Dean Kootnz's novels as literary masterpieces, but they were nice little 'sitcoms' for me. Easy to read with action to keep you engaged, but this is one book I didn't finish. Lost interest about 100 pages in and couldn't continue. Very rare for me. There are many others out there that will enjoy this book.

One of Koontz's best books. By the end of the books I was so caught up in the story that I physically felt bad for the lead character. Very well written (as are most by Koontz) and definitely keeps you engrossed in the story throughout. I am so glad there are more books available in this series (& more still to come). If you even slightly like Koontz or are looking to give him a try, this is the book you should read.

Odd Thomas (talk about killing your parents for naming you weird things!) sees dead people and has strange psychic abilities. He might be odd but apparantly his girlfriend, Stormy, is gorgeous. Go figure! Anyway, his home town is inundated with evil shadows (bodocks) which spike his weird meter and sets Odd on a mission to find out what is going on. This is typical Dean Koontz - way out there but enjoyable nonetheless. I usually like Koontz's writing and this was no exception. Odd is a quirky guy but also loveable, caring and kind. There is a few murders in it but no really graphic details. Even the squeamish should be able to read this one. The ending is very sad and I admit to having tears in my eyes when it was done. Book 2 - Forever Odd should be interesting.

Such a wonderful story...well written, entertaining, hilarious and, at times, quite touching. Koontz has created an excellent series with this book being the first of the series. Odd, a 21 yr old fry cook, sees the dead and...well...the fun ensues! This will be a quick read because it is so well written and I recommend this book to everyone I know!

I'm sorry Dean but this one just didn't make the grade! Too much detail in too many subjects will bore a reader to death! Now I am a huge Dean Koontz fan and I've read lots of his stuff. This one just couldn't hold my interest. It was literally overkill with detail. Still, in my humble opinion âWatchersâ is my favorite book of all time. I could read or listen to the audio book over and over with that one. Some of my other favorites were the Bad Place, Strangers, Midnight, Door to December and The Voice of the night. It seems that the newer books are missing an element that the older books have. Come on Dean! You can do much better than Odd Thomas!

I haven't read a Koontz novel since HS and thought I might see if his writing was still appealing to me. I noticed a line of "Odd" books and decided I'd start at the beginning.
For a book that is more mystery than horror, this book scared me. Well, it gave me the creeps. I couldn't predict any of it. I enjoyed the main character and found his relationships fun to explore.

This is the start of a great Koontz series. Odd Thomas can see (but not speak to) the dead, and he sometimes just KNOWS the right thing to do. He's a young man who has given himself over to just that, doing the right thing to help both the living and the dead. His particularly endearing character is funny, self-critical, and spiritual in a sort of down-to-earth way; after all, the dead are just people that aren't alive anymore, to him. If you like anti-heroes, he's not it. He's a kind of old-fashioned hero we don't see that much anymore. Any moral ambiguities are more in his head, due to his self-questioning, than actual. Two scenes that stuck in my head may give you a nice sample: Thomas, hard at work as a fry cook in a popular diner, trying to get his orders straight while not betraying the fact that the diner is suddenly swarming with evil shadows that followed a customer in - because if they realize he can see them he'll have a fatal accident within seconds. Later in the book, Thomas chooses a baseball bat as his weapon and goes striding off without hesitation to try to stop several gunmen. I immediately ordered the next two books after I read this one.

Odd Thomas - a book, as I usually do on airplanes, that I picked up to read during a cross country flight. After a few out there kind of weird books from Dean Koontz, he comes back to his roots with Odd Thomas. Thomas is sort of like a psychic superhero who can see evil, and events that might happen. And, oh yah, he can see the dead Elvis. Any book with dead Elvis ghosting around in it is worth checking out. This book has it's villains, has a hero, has a tragedy, and has a great conclusion. Kind of a sixth sense type feel to this book, worth reading.

From Publishers Weekly-
"Once in a very great while, an author does everything right-as Koontz has in this marvelous novel.
Odd Thomas, who narrates, is odd indeed: only 20, he works contentedly as a fry cook...The reason for his lack of ambition? A much rarer talent: Odd sees and converses with ghosts, the lingering dead who have yet to pass on, a secret he has kept from nearly everyone but his girlfriend, an eccentric author friend and the local police chief, whom he occasionally helps solve terrible crimes."

1. Odd Thomas
2. Forever Odd
3. Brother Odd
This character is one that Dean Koontz likes and likes writing about.
Dean Koontz: "When I wrote ODD THOMAS, the title character came to me fully formed, as if he were a real person whom I had known all my life. No character in any of my previous novels led me through his story with such grace, with his voice unfailingly strong in my mind's ear, making revelations about himself and his family that were surprising even shocking in some instances yet seemed inevitable to me the moment they were made."
I forsee more books in this series.

Odd Thomas was a book that lived up to it's hype which I rarely ever say about a book. Usually when I read a book that everyone tells me is so good I find that it's commercial in the aspect that it caters to a general audience and is below my standards.

First we meet Odd; the main character in which the book is named for. Koontz did a superb job of making him seem like the most normal boy you'd ever meet. He lives a quiet life, works as a fry cook, and lives in a 2 room garage apartment. Usually not the type of material that you write a book about, which in the same sense, you get a feel that's the reason he wrote a book about Odd.

Odd, for a lack of a better phrase, sees dead people. Odd sees everyone from a 12 year old girl that was raped and murdered to Elvis. Yes, Elvis Presley. In his little town of Pico Mundo, California the King lives on, yet when Koontz places Elvis on Odd's life, it's far from cheesy. In a strange sense you feel that not only does he add to the story, he belongs in the story.

We are introduced to Odd's gift in the beginning of the book when he sees 12 year old Penny Kallisto. Penny was raped and murdered by who we shortly find out is Odd's high school acquaintance Harlo Landerson. Odd in the past has solved several cases like this, which in return as earned him a close relationship with Chief Wyatt Porter, a sort of surrogate father to him.

His girlfriend/fiance Stormy Llewellyn is the next main and second most important character as Odd's life is defined and shaped by her. Stormy is well written and towards the middle of the book, you really feel the bond between her and Odd and why they consider themselves soulmates. The author did an excellent job of having them add to one another's role in the story instead of her seeming like space filler like so many authors tend to do when adding a "supporting cast" to their books.

The readers are introduced quickly to "Fungus Man" who we can identify as an antagonist. Odd gives him the nickname because of his fungus yellow hair and completion. Even though he brings no element of surprise, he does leave you in suspense as to what his role really is. It's made clear through hints throughout the book and in Odd's own words as he is narrating the story that something terrible is going to go down in Pico Mundo, we just don't know exactly what for a few chapters.

A little further in, meeting Odd's best friend Little Ozzy only completes the unusual cast. Little Ozzy is a writer, an art critic, a 400 lb man with 11 fingers, and the keeper of a 58 year old cat named Terrible Chester. Ozzy demanded that Odd sit down and write his tale to help him cope with what has happened to him in all the events of the book and to deal with reality.

The fateful event that takes place doesn't last long in the sense that it's drawn out for chapters and chapters and is rather short and sweet with plenty of curve balls thrown. Even in it's brevity it doesn't disappoint and since I never give anything anyway, I can't really critique it too much but know that it was well written and something you won't walk away from feeling let down.

Through the lingering dead, a satanic cult, normal (and not so normal) life of a 20 year old boy, grief, tears, and love this book is amazing and possibly the first in a series Dean Koontz will be most remembered by.

My whole family loved this book. It is a great read. We all fell in love with Thomas. This is not a typical Dean Koontz book. It is highly interesting and very sentimental.

I very much enjoyed this book. I am a medium who does talk to ghosts and I found this fictional story very realistic.I've noticed that they have made it into a graphic novel. I'm giving up my copy of this book so I can have a spac e for the graphic novel.

Odd Thomas just never drew me in. It wasn't my cuppa story. The character of Odd felt gimmicky and the narrative was too rambling, it lacked focus. I'm still yawning.

I will give the next book Forever Odd a go because it's already in my TBR pile, but my expectation for enjoyment is pretty low.

I loved this book! Normaly, I really don't bother with anything like this. However, I was fascinated by the story of a short order cook who had psychic (spelled wrong) powers. I look forward to the sequal.

i don't know how a story with such an odd premise of the dead speaking to a fry cook in Mojave can also be so beautifully written but somehow Dean Koontz did it. the story was disturbing to me is why the lower rating than normal for this book from me. Maybe it's supposed to be. You judge.

First book that I've read in this series and it didn't disappoint. Excellent character development, you really get inside the head of the main character, especially. Keeps you intrigued all the way to the last page -- doesn't just 'drop the ball', as so many novels do, to rush the ending.

Odd Thomas is a simple young man, who works as a short-order cook in Pico Mundo, CA. He doesn't have a fancy house or car. One thing he does have is the unique ability to see the dead. It's this ability that leads him to discover that a local man is planning to launch an attack agains the citizens of Pico Mundo. Stopping it won't be simple, though, and Odd must keep his wits about him if he is to prevent harm from befalling this quiet desert town.

Dean Koontz wrote another winner. The characters are well developed, the story line is nail biting - on the edge of your seat type of read. I just couldn't put it down. I heartedly recommend it to thriller/horror readers. The "Odd Thomas" series is excellent, worth re-reading time after time. No re-post here, this book is a keeper.

Let me preface my review by saying that I saw the movie a few years ago and enjoyed it very much, so I fully expected to enjoy the book. And I did. However, I couldn't stop picturing Anton Yelchin as Odd and it made me very sad. That being said, the movie was a pretty fair representation of the book. Minus the parts with Odd's insanely bad parents. OMG they were terrible, horrible people!

The story is told by the protagonist, Odd Thomas, who can see the dead...and other otherworldly things. He lives a life of simplicity as a fry cook in a small town and wants nothing more than to settle down with his soul mate, Stormy and maybe get a job selling tires...eventually. He does his best to help the dead settle whatever business they still have on this plane so that they can finally cross over to the next.

But that all changes the day the Fungus Man comes into the diner where Odd works. This man is the precursor to the tragedy about to hit Odd's town. Odd is then in a race to figure out what horrible thing is about to happen in his town, learn what the Fungus Man has to do with it all, and keep as many people safe as possible.

Having enjoyed the movie so much, I kind of expected the book to blow me out of the water. It did not. It was good, very good even, but not great. The story was very sad really. Learning the way Odd and Stormy grew up, the burden of his "gift", the ending. I'm a little hesitant to continue with the series, but really, I need to find out what happens to Odd next.

Even though it didn't knock my socks off, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who's into the supernatural.

"The dead don't talk. I don't know why." But they do try to communicate, with a short order cook in a small desert town serving as their reluctant confidant. Odd Thomas thinks of himself as an ordinary guy, if possessed of a certain measure of talent at the Pico Mundo Grill and rapturously in love with the most beautiful girl in the world, Stormy Llewellyn."

"Maybe he has a gift, maybe it's a curse, Odd has never been sure, but he tries to do his best by the silent souls who seek him out. Sometimes they want justice, and Odd's otherworldly tips to Pico Mundo's sympathetic police chief, Wyatt Porter, can solve a crime. Occasionally they can prevent one. But this time it's different."

"A mysterious man comes to town with a voracious appetite, a filing cabinet stuffed with information on the world's worst killers, and a pack of hyena-like shades following him wherever he goes. Who the man is and what he wants, not even Odd's deceased informants can tell him. His most ominous clue is a page ripped from a day-by-day calendar for August 15."

"Today is August 15." In less than twenty-four hours, Pico Mundo will awaken to a day of catastrophe. As evil coils under the searing desert sun, Odd travels through the shifting prisms of his world, struggling to avert a looming cataclysm with the aid of his soul mate and an unlikely community of allies that includes the King of Rock 'n' Roll. His account of two shattering days when past and present, fate and destiny converge is the stuff of our worst nightmares - and a testament by which to live sanely if not safely, with courage, humor, and a full heart that even in the darkness must persevere.

I loved this book -- it is very intriguing!
