I was charmed by this book, a story of two old friends who started selling rare books together in the 1940s. The book moves back and forth between their voices as each tells her story, and this can be distracting at first, but becomes easier to follow as you get to "know" each woman's voice. Stern and Rostenberg were literary pioneers who not only sold books, but also wrote books, and Stern's discovery of Louisa May Alcott's sensationalist fiction changed forever the way we view Alcott now.

While this was an interesting story of two ladies and how they came to collect old books, I had hoped for more. I had hoped they would relate how to estimate the worth of some more recent books. But they mostly dealt in very early books from the 14th through 18th century. Most of these books are of interest only to those with very deep pockets.

However, the associated detective story of Louisa Alcott's other stories was fascinating.

The story of two women and their adventures in the used and rare book trade. A great read for bibliophiles.
