This is probably the best World War II memoir that I have ever read. Shows the reader, in great detail, exactly what it was like to be on the front lines during these two battles. Great read.
This was one of the best books I've ever read. The true story from one who lived thru the hell of these battles. I was amazed he lived to tell the tale. If anyone is a war history buff you must read this account of a war that the Marines are a legend for. A man that went to war for his country and was willing to lay his life down for it. We will never know his kind. A lucky man to return and share his life changing experiences with us. God bless him.
I had to read this book for class and have not been able to stop thinking about it. The devil's in the details in this book: as a Marine, Sledge has a keen eye for all of the little atrocities, the personal horrors, that we don't learn about when we talk about war. Sledge's gripping account is told straightforwardly, in simple language, and refrains from being critical, preachy, or anachronistic. It's a compelling picture of life on the front lines of the Pacific Theater.
