After knocking the lights out of her boyfriend when she catches him cheating on her, Chicago fire fighter Stella Griffin hops on her Harley and heads for Sweet Pepper, Tennessee, where she ends up becoming the small towns fire chief. When her dear friend Tory Lambert dies after her gingerbread-style house is set ablaze, Stella suspects arson and foul play.

As Stella investigates, she gets help from a most unlikely sourcethe ghost of Eric Gamlyn, Sweet Peppers old fire chief. And if that isnt enough to rattle her, attractive police officer John Trump seems to have taken an interest in her. But Stellas got to stay focused if she hopes to smoke out a killer before her own life is extinguished.

Dollycass Thoughts
As the daughter of a firefighter I was thrilled with this book. My dad passed away 25 years ago and it still seems like yesterday. I wish he would haunt his old firehouse, maybe he does? He did not die on a scene but he was a chief too just like Eric Gamlyn and I so wanted to be a firefighter and work side by side with him. At that time female firefighters were few and far between. Ladies were on the auxiliary and handled bake sales and delivered food and drink to the big fires. I would have loved Stellas life even with the crummy boyfriend.

The story is so well written and full of wonderful real characters. The drill/practice sessions ring true to me as someone who has observed many. Chief Erics haunts struck my heart. Another firefighter lost too soon with so many plans and dedication. Stella has a lot on her plate in Sweet Pepper and with a bit of help she comes out on top. A sassy, smart, sleuth that this reader plans to enjoy tagging along with for a very long time.

J.J. Cook has written an extraordinary debut. This book will be burning up bookstore shelves. Its hotter than a 5 alarm fire!! Respond and extricate your copy as soon as possible.

I really liked this story, part mystery, part budding romance and part ghost story, with a Dalmatian puppy thrown in for good measure. (What else?) Look forward to the next one in the series, with another mystery to solve. It's no wonder I love this story, my favorite set of authors wrote it. They are always great.

I enjoyed this, the first in a new series featuring Stella Griffin, a Chicago firefighter who is on temporary assignment to Sweet Pepper, Tennessee. I liked the characters, including that of Eric Gamlyn, the ghost of the old fire chief....He haunts the cabin where Stella is residing, and she is the only one who can communicate with him.....there are some surprises, including an unexpected relative of Stella's....I figured out "who dun it", but it did not interfere with the over all enjoyment of the book, even though I do not usually enjoy "ghost stories"......

"Where's the fire?"

Stella Griffin moves to Sweet Pepper, Tennessee to train firefighters and be the fire chief. She is running from a bad relationship in Chicago. A friend's house goes up in flames as she is trying to train her new recruits. Stella suspects arson and foul play. The ghost of former fire chief, Eric Gamlyn, assists her with the investigation. Family secrets are revealed that could change Stella's plans to return to Chicago.

There was good character development and dialogue. I look forward to learning more about the late fire chief and why he still haunts his old house and the fire station.

Cute series about a female Fire Chief from Chicago that goes to TN on her Harley. She comes across an investigation and a ghost. Plus she finds out something about herself. Look forward to reading the next book in the series.

I Loved this book! The main character starts out trying to solve a murder, but winds up coming across some other surprising information. Many suspects and potential motives. And it is so well written that you forget that the fire chief's ghost isn't real! I just bought the next one in this series because I did not want to wait for it on here (since I was #41)!!
