I had really high hopes starting this book. I really enjoyed Yours Until Dawn, so I thought I would feel the same way about this book... not so. Don't get me wrong, I liked the book, it was an average story, but it is going to the Used Book Store as a trade in. Some of the antics the heroine does makes her hard to like and some of the story was just too far out there. This story is in 2 parts, the first was a bit slow, 2nd was much better. I am not giving up on Teresa Medeiros.

I was pleasantly surprised by this book! The story was really good IMO. The beginning kinda drug for me though but I'm glad I stuck w/ it.

This is the story of Claire Scarborough & Justin Connor. It starts out with Claire in a school for girls in England where she is staying while her father is mining for gold in New Zealand. Soon she is informed that her father has passed away leaving her an orphan. She has a guardian, Justin Connor, but through seven years at the school, he never visits or writes. leaving Claire bitter and treated cruelly at the school. At the age of eighteen, she and two of the school's employees set off to New Zealand to find her guardian. Unable to find him ,the two employees dump her overboard and leave her. She literally washes up on the shore and is found by her guardian, who has no idea that she is his ward. He falls head over heels in love with her & she is falling for him until she sees her father's pocketwatch with her picture in it. She keeps thinking that he will recognize her, but he doesn't. He feels guilty about not taking care of his ward & goes to London in search of her & to claim his inheritance after being informed that his father has died. He tells Claire, who is using the name Emily Scarlet, to wait & he will return for her. Claire is upset & feels betrayed & goes back to London on her own, without Justin's knowledge. When Justin gets to London & finds out that his ward is no longer at the school, he puts out a reward to anyone who can find her & bring her to him. When she is found, he feels like a fool because he thought she was much younger & she is the woman he fell in love with in New Zealand & she never revealed her true identity to him. Now he feels that he can never have her & has to act more of a father figure to her. The story goes on to include many balls & adventures. Eventually, they figure out that they can't be together as guardian & ward because they are too much in love with each other to be anything but lovers. They do everything they can for each other & their love is so sweet you can feel it as you are reading. He rescues her several times & you can feel how much they love each other. It has a wonderful ending with many twists & turns. I won't say anything more because I don't want to ruin it for you. I high highly recommend this book. It was very good & I could hardly put it down!

The last thing Justin Connor expected to find washed up on the wild shores of New Zealand was a young woman asleep on the sand, curled like a child beneath the moonlight. Though fiercely protective of the haven he had found on this island paradise, Justin was compelled to rescue this mysterious refugee, little realizing she would shatter his peace forver with her defiant courage, her vivid beauty, and the memories she stirred of a past best forgotten.

Orphaned, cheated of her inheritance, Emily had sailed halfway around the world to find the man who promised her father to take care of her-and instead had left her a charity case in an English boarding school. She never dreamed she'd be tossed by the pounding surg practically at his feet, or that she'd find him a disturbingly handsome recluse with the look of a pirate...and a disarming tenderness in his amber-flecked eyes. Confused by conflicting emotions, Emily was determined to make Justin pay for her years of lonliness-with nothing less than his heart.
