It doesn't get much better than serial killers and sex, does it? Jaid Black delivers a healthy helping of both in One Dark Night.
Nicole Adenike is a surgeon in a Cleveland that's lived under the predation of a sadistic serial killer for the past decade. Her friend Kim is a psychic-- well, sort of. She doesn't see things too often. But one night, she starts dreaming of the killer's next victim, and Nikki convinces Kim to go to the police. There, they meet Thomas Cavanah, romantic lead(TM). But, despite her newfound doughnut cravings, Nikki is already involved in an online relationship with a dominant middle school teacher (yes, folks, you read that right!) named Richard...
Whatever you do, do not read the back cover synopsis. For that matter, don't read most of the book's reviews. All of the above give away the big plot twist that comes around page fifty, making for pretty boring setup reading. (After all, YOU know what's gong to happen, and you keep yelling "don't go in the house!" or whatever you yell at dumb blondes in bad horror films.) While the romance angle is quite stock, and therefore predictable-- when was the last time you read a romance where the male and female leads did not eventually find themselves romantically entangled?-- Black has a good sense of what makes for a well-written genre mystery, and throws twists, turns, and red herrings aplenty into figuring out who the killer is. (If you know Roger Ebert's rules of mystery movies, you'll figure it out pretty quick, but Black does manage to invest the revelation of the killer's identity with a bit of panache.)

The book was okay. I little slow in the the beginning, but the serial killer plot was good and more intense than other romantic suspense books I have read with a serial killer plot. The sexual tension and sex scenes between hero and heroine were better than average. I also like Jaid Black's dialogue and thinking processes. Some books "dumb down" and make the hero and heroine stupid. Black is fresh and I enjoyed the interaction between Thomas and Nikki, the hero and heroine.

This book is very good. I could not put it down. (Stayed up until 3am to finish it.) Suspenseful and steamy. Characters were interesting and not run of the mill. This is the best one I have read from this author, so far. I hope she has others like it.

Jaid Black mostly hit the ball right out of the park with this novel.
Nikki Adenike is a surgeon living in a city where a serial killer has been on the loose for 10 year. For various reasons, she becomes his next target, has a few narrow misses with said serial killer, makes loads of smart-ass comments, has some pretty graphic sex, etc. Any more and I will give away too much of the plot, which I don't want to do!
It was a good solid novel, not for those whom are squeamish on sex scenes, some of which just made me burst out laughing.

So this was my first full length book by Jaid Black...
It's not as spicy as her EC titles, but for a mass market paperback, it was pretty heated (definitely enough to stand out from the standard fare of contemporary romances!)! It took a little bit to really get started, but once it got there kept my attention the whole way through!
and I liked both the heroine and Hero, as well as the secondary characters: I loved the mindset of the h, as hers was easier to relate to than others I've come across. And who doesn't love an intelligent heroine to boot?
And the Hero... definitely worth some drool!
And those secondary characters weren't bad either, though I will admit to thinking the book spent a little too much time with them then strictly necessary.
As for the suspense, It was pretty good for such a short book! The mystery of who the big bad was kept me guessing the whole way through!so...
This one's found a permanent home on my shelf!

I'm a big fan of romantic suspense, but this was, as my title suggests, just OK for me. I liked the characters, but it seemed like Black was trying just a bit too hard to throw you off the trail of the killer's identity by tossing in extraneous characters everywhere. The dialogue was a bit heavy at times, but the suspense was good. In all, a book I'm glad I picked up, but probably wouldn't read again.

This was a pretty good mystery, for an erotic romance novel. Since the main heroine is into some light bdsm, I thought that was an interesting aspect of the story. However it wasn't really delved into, inter-personally between h/h, more like lots of data and information about how "normal" it is. I liked the ending.

I couldn't put this one down (though I was putting ointment on my fingers cause the sex scenes burned through the pages). WHEW!! Great story, great characters, great everything. If you are squimish on descriptive sex, be weary of this one. I will definitely find more of Ms. Black's stuff!!
a great thriler
a dream lover can be a nightmare
Quick read, decent story line.
A very good engaging read.
It was difficult to figure out who the assailant was which made it difficult to put the book down. You just wanted to keep reading to figure out who it was.

Dr. Nikki Adenike is successful and content with who she is--but her love life is nowhere. Used to being in control, she longs to surrender herself to her most secret fantasies. So, night after night, Nikki searches the Web. There, she finds Richard--a seductive stranger uncannily attuned to her desires, someone almost too good to be true...
If you like a racy thriller, then this is the book for you! Don't let your kids read this one!
When Dr. Nikki Adenike's rendezvous with an Internet playmate turns into a life-and-death fling with the serial killer called "Lucifer," she manages to escape--into the arms of the detective investigating the case. But the danger is far from over--and a newfound passion is just beginning....hot, steamy, very sensually arousing book!
Not one of Black's normally erotic books. But still it was a good read.
good story and the sex was good too! now off the read "wolf tales V".
A good "who done it" with a bit of erotic thrown in. Story does a good job of throwing you off the trail of the real villan. Interesting, believable characters. A few twist and turns to keep your interest and to keep you guessing. Overall a pretty good read.
One of the best books I have ever read.
I'm not into the D/S scene but this book has a pretty good plot. I was sure I knew "who done it" and was nicely surprised by the ending. A good read all in all.
A Fling to Die For
The plot is very much like Kiss the Girls by James Patterson, overall it was a good read.

So, night after night, Nikki searches the Web. There, she find Richard - a seductive stranger uncannily attuned to her desires, someone almost too good to be true...
this is not romantic suspense-this is pornography disguised as such. The gist of this book is submissive/domination sex. Graphic-be forewarned. Horrible:(
