Mitch Albom is an author who has a lot to live up to. After such great hits as TUESDAYS WITH MORRIE and THE FIVE PEOPLE YOU MEET IN HEAVNE, I opened my copy of FOR ONE MORE DAY wondering if he'd be able to pull off another winner. The answer, wholeheartedly, is yes.
Albom pays tribute to mothers with the story of Charley "Chick" Benetto, who remembers clearly the words his father told him as a young boy: "You can be a mama's boy or a daddy's boy. But you can't be both."
For most of his life, Chick worked towards being a daddy's boy. Even when his father's love was elusive, it was the one thing he always strove to earn. It wasn't until later that Chick learned, as everyone does, that love not given freely can never be earned, no matter how hard we try.

Fabulous read! Albom as usual makes us cry and enjoy it at the same time! This is the story of one mans journey...trying to right a wrong...He finds himself at the end of his rope when a miraculous day begins with his dead mother. He begins to unravel his life as he views it from his moms point of view. A must read and reread!

I loved this book. How the main character has ruined his life then suddenly has an experience which leaves him looking at his life in a different way, is very profound to say the least. I have passed this book on to friends who I know will enjoy it as much as I did.

This was a good read, a bit on the sad side in typical Mitch Albom fashion. It is about a man with many problems and regrets who tries to end his life. His mother, who has been dead for eight years, helps him forgive himself and put his life back on track, a heartwarming story about a mother's love, proving that you can't really lose your loved ones if they are in your heart.

I read this book right around Christmastime and I was very touched. Call me melodramatic, but I absolutely loved this book! I thoroughly enjoyed the way the story played out. This was an easy, affectionate read and a breeze to get through - I finished in one day.

This is a very moving story of family and childhood misconceptions that follow us into adulthood. It is also a story of the power of a mother's love. It is a quick read with some beautiful wisdom. The first page grabs you and doesn't let go. "...every family is a ghost story. The dead sit at our tables long after they have gone." I highly recommend.

I have to say this book is just OK. I've read Tuesday with Morrie which was a very touching book, but this one just kinda falls short. For One More Day is about Chick Benetto, a middle-aged man whose had ups and downs (mostly downs) and has given up on life. He decides to try to end it all, but before he is able to do so, he gets to spend one more day with his deceased mother. He learns much about his life that he didn't know or understand until he sees it from this different perspective, his mother's. It is a nice story with a happy ending. Very quick read.

Another good Mitch Albom book. His books are short but they sure do say a lot. My heart went out to the mother who tried so hard to provide for her children and was treated like garbage by towns people who couldnt mind their own business and her own son. She never once said anything about her ex husband despite what he did to her. I would recommend this.

One of my book clubs chose this book to read for next month's reading. I grudgingly purchased it and painfully read it. *laugh* Okay, I admit it, I didn't like Tuesdays With Morrie. There. I said it. My problem with For One More Day is that it's so obviously written to evoke emotion that the story seems so secondary to seeing how many Kleenex the author can force you through. It was also SO predictible so instead of grabbing the hankies, I was grabbing for the caffeine. From the first few chapters, I knew the entire story for the most part. Yes, the very last epilogue gives you a little "ohhhhhhhhh..." but still, nothing really death defying going on there either.
I'm glad it was a short book. The main character was dry, the whole concept was too much, and the writing was too wrought with emotion.

This is my second book by the author that I have read. Mr. Albom has a wonderful writing style and easily draws you in. You do not realize it until you look and see just how many pages you have read.
This is a story about choices, the choices that even we as children make and how they can affect things far into our future. It is a rather sad tale of regrets. It is also about family, secrets and divorce.

I might be the only person who is brave enough to call this book what it was to me: just like every other Albom book. It was nice, but if you've read one, you don't need to read the others. It was sweet and trite and fabulous for old lady book clubs (which is why I read it in the first place).

This just wasn't what I thought it would be. I love the idea behind the story, but I didn't find the main character to be very endearing.
Awesome book about how he speaks to his mother. I thought I liked Tuesdays with Morrey better but I really could not put this book down. It tells about a baseballs player life from alcoholism to break up of his marriage and loosing touch with his daughter. He ends up in a car accident because of his drinking,depression. In this he is out and speaks to his dead mother reliving his past it gives him a renewed life where he spends time with his daughter and exwife. He ends up with second chances to live a life before he dies from his head injury. Truly a bittersweet story.

This is a beautifully written book to which anyone who has ever loved their mother can relate.
Precious and meaningful story. If you have lost a loved one, this is a fantasy you may want to imagine yourself in. A+ and Heartwarming.
Thoughful reading about your days with parents. I read it in a day. It is interesting, sad and a visit with those who have left us. I would recommend it to all. Please, those who have depression or anxiety problems pass this one on to another book which will bring you into another world or place.
I didn't feel that this was as good as Albom's previous books. It took me a while to get hooked into. The end brought me back into it and I did shed a few tears. (but that's no surprise with me) I would recommend this book to others.

If you could go back and spend one more day with your mom who had passed away--what would you say? Chick had this chance and he did spend one more day with his mom. Things weren't exactley as he thought they were. He got to see a little more what his mom was really feeling and hear her thoughts. This book will make you realize what you might really think is important --isn't. Great book. So very glad i read it.

This is a small book but not one to rush through, as there is much to ponder. To some it may seem simplistic, but the author is on a quest to tell others what life is all about and each persons relationships to one another. It's not really a religious book, nor is it a preachy book. It's about his own experiences and how the reader can relate to them and to their own.
What an excellent afternoon read! I loved this book! Another true wonder of Mitch Albom in his one and only engrossing style! This story hit home like a ton of bricks when I thought of my own life and family in the same scenario. If anyone has ever lost someone dear to them and after that person is gone they think of what "could have been IF things had been different" on the last day they saw them or the last time they talked to them...I also must say bring the tissues, it is a very heart-rendering, love story of a mother and a son.

The stories that this author unfolds for me are always fascinating. I understand that this one was biographical yet I liked it just as much as others. There were two parts spoken by Charley's mother that will stay with me for a long time: "Trees spend all day looking up to God." "When someone is in your heart they are never truly gone. They can come back to you even at unlikely times."
What would I do if I had one more day with someone I love who is gone? I can only think of my father whose death occurred when I was hundreds of miles away. My only solace is that I was able to help him recover from his first stroke. Yes, I wish I had one more day.

My mom past away a few years ago so I really liked this book and could relate to it very much. It gave me such hope for my life and how I look at it.

I wasn't really impressed by this book. It was a quick read, and it kept me turning pages but I didn't really feel inspired by it. It was pretty obvious what was happening and the characters seemed rather one-dimensional to me.
My favorite parts of the novel were the "Time My Mother Stood Up For Me"/"Times I Didn't Stand Up for My Mother" sections interspersed through the story. There were several humorous stories contained in these, and it was during those points I felt I could most see who the characters were.

This book was very good - the author is one of my favorites! It is about the relationship between a son and his mother - very touching!
I read this entire book on my flight home tonight. It is my favorite of Mitch Albom's books. I ws able to relate to it on so many levels. The narrator is about to kill himself because of what his life turned out to be. Growing up he chose his father over his mother (like me) and then unexpectedly, his father walked out on him and his sister and never really looked back.(like me) He ends up being able to spend one more day with his mother (who has since died) and finds out so much about his past that he did not know, and is able to tell her how he felt. Its a great book that brought tears to my eyes, and i think a lot of people will be able to relate to it in different ways.

Not as good as his previous works. He raises some good points, but this kind of fell flat for me.

Oh this book was so good I finished it in one day and it made me think of my mom and grandmother as well. For never take your friends and family member's for granted for I did with my grandmother and now with her not here I wish I could go back and change things for this book was so good I hope they make a movie out of this one.

Bottom line of the book: it tries to teach you to treasure the time you have with loved ones and make the most of that time...so you don't have to wish for one more day so you can redeem yourself.
