I adored this book. I seriously smiled non-stop like a 14-year-old girl with a major crush on a boy across the hall. First, Angus, he is grumpy, moody, irritable (help me out here) and all those other adjectives describing someone who woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Nevertheless, he is smart, sensitive, cocky (yes this goes into the good quality side) and loyal. Second, Mary is grumpy, moody, irritable but also, smart, sensitive, witty, and loyal. Yup, they are exactly alike so they challenge each other, butt heads and make for a hilarious but fun-loving book.
Angus and Mary make the book but that does not mean the storyline is not good. Because it is. The book had a Beauty and the Beast quality but there was no clear line on who was the beauty and who was the beast. Both Angus and Mary felt flawed physically but viewed the other person as beautiful. The beauty they saw in each other was what I loved about the book.
The servants make for great minor characters especially the feisty, tell it like it is Abigail who seems to be willing to give her right and/or left teat for about everything (figuratively speaking of course)!

The end seemed a bit rushed and seemed incomplete. However, there is a book 2 and I definitely will read it.

4 out of 5 stars.

Cover- 1 out of 5 stars- horrible cover- it doesnt show Angus like he truly is in the book or even close. It does a real disservice to the book to show him without his scars.

This is the first book I have read from this author. I found it very average. It didn't grip me to the point I couldn't put it down like a Lisa Kleypas or Elizabeth Hoyt romance. It was just OK. I have one other book by Karen Hawkins in my library, so I will give her one more chance, but at this point I won't order any more books by this author again.

I really liked this book, so much that I read it all in one night! The verbal banter was wonderful and the storyline continued to get better and better. Lots of great tension, fustration and anger! Lots to enjoy with this story.

This book was great. Set in Scottland in 1822.

The heroine shows just the perfect amount of strength to make the character enjoyable, but she is still naive enough to make it feel real. The hero is initially a boar, but ultimately thaws into a character worthy for this story.

The secondary characters don't take away from the plot, while providing just enough influence to keep the story moving in the right direction.

I am very excited to read the next books in the series (When they come out). Mary's (heroine)family is mentioned with enough details to make it hard to wait.

Enjoy!

Think Beauty and the Beast with a touch of Phantom of the Opera but amusing and you get One Night in Scotland. The title was misleading though because Mary and Angus had more than one night together. This was loosely related to the McLean series since Marys two older sisters were married to the McLean brothers.

Mary was so enthusiastic about life that I couldnt help but cheer for her. She was an intelligent character and I really wanted her to get everything she wanted. Nice that she wasn't the typical skinny heroine either.

Though Angus was scarred in more ways than one, he wasnt exactly in an annoying brooding poor me state. He had a few moments of I cant let go of my dead wife but he kept those at a minimal. Plus the fact that he had a sense of humor helped. I loved the scenes they have together because their arguments were so entertaining.

I could have done without the crass maid though and was glad she wasnt around halfway through the book.

The plot was very simple. Mary needed an artifact from Angus to save her brother. Angus being paranoid needed to have her identity confirmed so he placed Mary on house arrest until a mutual friend could come and verify. It was fun to read.

There were a few things I disliked though. I thought the ending came on too suddenly and was wrapped up too nicely. The "I love you" exchanged was just too soon. There were also things discussed that was supposed to give some backstory to the characters like Anguss parents arguing all the time or his dead wife that didnt really add to his character or the plot.

Overall it was a delightful read and wouldnt mind continuing with the series. I believe the next one will be about William Hurst (Marys other brother) who has to take to artifact to rescue their brother.
