Really excellent. This is the first volume of Callow's biography of Welles. The narrative is engaging and very readable, and Callow has obviously done extensive primary research on Welles. Callow also engages previous schalorship on Welles. I don't know that I always agree with Callow's conclusions or specualtions about Welles' character, but he is a very thought-provoking author and creates a compelling portrait of Welles.
