Slightly confusing, but ultimately very enjoyable. I wish there had been more info about how the world ended up like it did. Obviously there was an apocalyptic event of some sort, but that was in the Before Times and it isn't really explained.
Tarin is a wonderful character! It's a little hard getting used to the way he speaks, but just remind yourself that he is basically a feral boy and it all makes more sense.

My first by this author. Historical (post apocolypse) fantasy with m/m & man/boy elements. Taken separately most of those are not elements I usually enjoy, I bought it based on recommendations. After reading, it's like 'oh my gosh, what was that' lol. Well written with a good plot, the characterizations really shine in this book. The main character is quirky, amusing, and has a difficult time getting out of his own way.
Recommended, fun reading...if there's a sequel, I'm so there.
