In this early Joanna Brady mystery, Jance does her usual solid job. When an elderly woman is murdered and her body left in the desert, Brady must navigate through thickets of false suspects, greedy heirs, and territorial disputes among law enforcement agencies, while also juggling the needs of her youg daughter and a surprise proposal from the new man in her life.

Jance's Joanna Brady is a tough-as-nails-yet-sensitive-single-mother-due-to-tragic-circumnstances heroine. I've loved reading this series. Jance does some amazing plot twists and turns and interconnects. Very creative and a real page turner.

Joanna Brady,Sheriff of Cochise County,Arizona, is one of the most interesting characters in fiction. Her devotion for the truth and her vulnerability as a young widow with a young child, along with excellent writing, make for a very interesting read.

I love this series...Sheriff Brady is one of us....Can't wait to read the next one..

When an elderly widow is found dead in the Arizona desert, it's easy enough to pin the killing on the teens caught driving her car across the Mexican border. But Sherrif Brady isn't buying it. The victim was a free spirit with a lover twenty years her junior and enough money for her grown kids to fight over.

ANOTHER GREAT BOOK BY JANCE. I LOVE IT THAT SHE KEEPS THE SAME PEOPLE GOING IN DIFFERENT BOOKS. THAT WAY, WHEN THE BOOK ENDS, IT'S ONLY GOING TO ANOTHER CHAPTER.
Another Joanna Brady book that rocks!
Great book super plot and a great ending.

A very enjoyable series.
A nice episode in this series, with some suspense and lots of potential suspects. There's quite a bit of this book focused on Brady's personal life instead of the mystery. Jance does a good job gracefully filling in the backstory, so a new reader shouldn't have any problem picking up the threads if they choose. I found the subplot regarding Junior and the eventual solution to be awfully unbelievable, but it does sort of balance the murders, so there's that. The beginning scene, with poor Alice in the cholla, gave me the shudders. I have unfortunate experience with cholla so that was all too vivid. On the whole, it was an enjoyable few hours of reading, but I won't remember it six months from now.
ETA: I read it again at the end of 2019, since I decided to read the whole series in order. I was right, except for the cholla scene, I didn't remember it. Brady's personal problems seemed more intrusive to me this time around too. But it's still a good series.

When an elderly widow is found dead in the AZ desert, it's easy enough to pin the killing on the teens caught driving her car across the border. But Sheriff Brady isn't buying it. A really good Joanna Brady book.
I have only recently discovered these Joanna Brady novels by JA Jance and I really like them. Joanna is a sheriff in Arizona who is always finding some kind trouble to get to the bottom of. The books are definitely slanted towards women readers (I think), but my husband reads them too. I'm sure it would be best to read them in order but you don't have to.

Joanna Brady, young widow, devoted mom, and sheriff of Cochise County Arizona, is a tough cop who gives no ground to lawbreakers. But now she's dealing with some big time political manuevering that could let someone get away with murder.

Joanna is forced to put her personal life on hold to dig deeper into the murder. But as the investigation gets sidetracked by some ugly local disputes, Sheriff Brady finds herself wading through a murky morass of graft and corruption that reaches into high places, and may have given someone reason to kill...and kill again.

#7 of the Joanna Brady mysteries
I love a Jance book. Especially the ones with Joanna Brady who is the Sheriff of Cochise County, Arizona.
good story line.
My favorite J.A. Jance character is Sheriff Joanne Brady of Cochise County, Arizona. In this one, "the slaying of a complex and truly uncommon senior is only one thread in a bloody tapestry--as death follows death in horrific succession."
