The book starts out slow in the beginning as there are many characters in many different places, so it's hard to keep track. But about halfway through the book everything picks up and moves at a quicker more interesting pace, especially once you get to know everyone. This book one as stated and there is only one more book after this in the series.

It's a good read but you've got to be able to keep track of everyone and what they are doing. It's good for a day when you're snowed in and have the time to read the book without any distractions.

The book introduces the reader to a world after a catastrophe where the only technology that survived was the use of manipulating DNA. So it seems, because the bands of outriders have orders to collect un-manipulated species of animals. Throughout the book, the focus swings between the leader of the band and his problems with a wayward member and Niki, who has been sent to gather new scouts from their drop-off point. In the process, she learns a bit about herself and who she is called to be.
