Helpful Score: 5
I loved the book, but it read a little slow through at least halfway through the book. Interesting but slow. But after the halfway mark it really picks up the pace and has that edge of the seat excitement I got from the other Alex Delaware novels I've read.
Helpful Score: 1
Really intriguing book with the main character of Alex Delaware the child psychologist working with gifted or very gifted children and the problems of one years later. Brings in lots of family problems in rich family with gifted nephew and what family history and business has to do with him. Alex's police detective friend Milo Sturgis is very helpful to solving the case after young gifted boy is charged with murder and psychotic problems. Good read and very interesting. One of Jonathan Kellerman's first three books.
An enjoyable read. Not necessarily the greatest mystery ever, but Kellerman's ability to bring pyschological theory to the lay level is impressive.
The first Kellerman book I read. A 1987 and the third of many Alex Delaware mysteries by Kellerman. I read this book a couple years ago, during my Jonathan Kellerman phase, I forgot most of it.
The concept of this book was very interesting. I enjoyed the characters but I didn't know if the story would go over my head.
money, power, greed always make for good storys.
dr. alex delaware is either the luckiest or unluckiest shrink in the world.

fast and good reading
Another excellent Alex Delaware novel. This series is awesome!
I enjoyed this book as well. The only way that I can some up this book is the same way Stephen King has sommed it up on the cover of the book. That states:
"Charged with suspense. This one is simply too good to miss." - Stephen King.
"Charged with suspense. This one is simply too good to miss." - Stephen King.

a great suspense novel.
This is definitely a page turner.
Very good Alex Delaware thriller.
another great Alex Deleware nove. A must for Deleware fans!!
This is his third novel with Alex Delaware as his leading man, dealing with complex psychological thriller-mystery magic.
The third novel to feature child psychologist Alex Delaware begins with a desperate, garbled phone call from former patient Jamey Cadmus, genius of record and heir to a construction fortune. The next day, Jamey is accused of the Lavender Slashings, a series of grisly homosexual murders that have rocked Los Angeles. The teenager's lawyer asks Alex to examine Jamey's recent history with the hope that a plea of diminished capacity will protect Jamey from a prison sentence. Though soon fired, Alex continues his investigation, motivated by the compassion and intelligence previously demonstrated in When the Bough Breaks and Blood Test. Tracing the rocky road of Jamey's emotional development, Alex crisscrosses L.A., moving from Beverly Hills mansions to biker cabins, from the old Haight district to mountain canyons, with stops at the U.C.L.A. medical library, the high-security section of the L.A.P.D. jail and some exquisitely appointed legal offices. Aided by his friend, homicide detective Milo Sturgis, Alex ignores warnings to stay away from the case and begins to discern an ominous pattern in Jamey's family history, connecting esoteric South American hallucinogens, a massively irresponsible real-estate scam and the ageless human motivations of revenge and greed.
How did I miss this opne when it came out? A really excellent Alex Delaware mystery where Alex really shines!
3rd Alex Delaware Novel

Intricately plotted thriller with child psychologist Alex Delaware attempting to prove that a former patient is not the psycopathic slayer of several young men. Flawed somewhat by a climatic scene which includes an unlikely happenstance with one of the suspects combined with an unbelievable non-response by police interrogators.
An Alex Delaware novel - a former patient calls him in the middle of the night and is then arrested at the scene of mutilation murder of his mentor and lover. Good complex plot.
A former patient of Alex Delaware is charged with murder ar the scene of the mutilation murder of his former mentor and lover.
"Charges with suspense. This one is simply too good to miss." Stephen King
This is the 3rd book in the Alex Delaware series. Kellerman mixes complex psychology in with detective fiction to make it a thinking person's thriller. I always enjoy his books.
complex plot, vivid characters, a true page turner..
Also read by my husband who wants more of his books.
I've never read anything by Jonathon Kellerman I haven't loved!
One of the Alex Delaware novels. You care about both the plot and what's happening in Alex Delaware's life.

Early Alex Delaware novel
In his third novel about psychologist Alex Delaware, the author is really hitting his stride. A must read for all Delaware fans.
Another fascinating mystery in the "Alex Delaware" series. Unputdownable.
Great book; but then I seem to really enjoy everything Jonathan Kellerman writes.
This was an excellent book. The ending was a total surprise. A top notch Alex Delaware book.
Alex Delaware series. These are really good mysteries.
This was a great read.
Vintage Dr. Alex Delaware -- excellent read! Really do recommend.
I think this was the first Alex Delaware novel of Jonathan Kellerman's that I read, and it kept me reading. A call from a former patient, a young man, to child psychologist Alex Delaware begins a middle-of-the-night drive into madness and murder and secrets...three things that make this a suspenseful and memorable book.
FROM THE PUBLISHER
Jonathan Kellerman's masterpiece of suspense comes to life in this tale of murder and deception. When six young prostitutes are found strangled in Los Angeles, an investigation begins that takes the reader on a wild journey of twists and turns involving powerful families and close friends.
Jonathan Kellerman's masterpiece of suspense comes to life in this tale of murder and deception. When six young prostitutes are found strangled in Los Angeles, an investigation begins that takes the reader on a wild journey of twists and turns involving powerful families and close friends.
When the phone rings in the middle of the night, child psychologist Alex Delaware does not hesitate. Driving through the dream-lit San Fernando Valley, Alex rushes to Jamey Cadmus, the patient he had failed five years before - and who now calls with a bizarre cry for help. But by the time Alex reaches Canyon Oaks Psychiatric Hospital, Jamey is gone, surfacing a day later in the hands of the police, who believe Jamey is the infamous Lavender Slasher, a psychotic serial killer. Wooed by a powerful attorney to build a defense, Alex will get a chance to do what he couldn't five years ago. And when he peers into a family's troubled history and Jamey's brilliant, tormented mind, the psychologist puts himself at the heart of a high-profile case. Because Alex knows that in a realm of money, loss, and madness, something terrible pushed Jamey over the edge - or else someone is getting away with murder.
Please, make me a deal on all the Kellerman books I have posted!!!
A friend of mine gave me a Jonathan Kellerman book and I was hooked instantly! Now I am going back and reading all of his books.
This story was amazing. I was very surprised at the twist and turns...never expected them. Ending left me saying..."WHAT?" I love when a book surprises me!

Only a child psychologist could have written this book, giving the victim a realistic spin while the main character, psychologist Alex Delaware, probes the minds of both the killer and victim to unravel the truth. Kellerman was undoubtedly an excellent psychologist, but mental health's loss is our gain.
This was a great read.
Kellerman books are always good. Alex Delaware is a good character
I was not able to put this book down, and the ending surprises me a lot.
-(#3 in the Alex Delaware series) I am so glad I didnt give up on this author. This was the best, by far. This is a story about Jamey. A very intelligent boy who calls Alex in the middle of the night and is not making sense, sounding psychotic and talking in unrelated words. Alex knew Jamey from several years back. Alex participated in a program for highly intelligent teens and befriended Jamey. He was surprised to see such a troubled boy. He was far from the Jamey he knew. That evening, Jamey escapes from the Psych hospital he was in and supposedly murders a friend of his who is a homosexual and a prominent bank owner. Jamey is also accused of being the lavender slayer. Alex is highered by the family attorney to help in the case. As Alex digs deeper he hits one brick wall after another until finally he starts to see the real story behind Jamey, his family history and what really happened to him. The suspense in this book is awesome. I couldnt put it down. Maybe this is the book that turned the corner for Kellerman. Looking forward to reading the next one

A very intelligent psychological thriller about a child psychologist trying to explain the murder of a former troubled patient as he explores the dark secrets of his high powered family.
When Alex Delaware gets a phone call from a former patient, young trubled genius who suffered a devastating mental collapse. When he drives through the night to save his wife and ends up morass of murder... when he uncovers the life of one of California leading families, and is witness to an explasion of murderous passions and shattering revealations...brace yourself for a shock-
Really quite dull. Didn't get into any action until around page 263. The book is 433 pages. Way too much psychology and not enough sleuthing.
This is the third Alex Delaware novel.
Excellent writer
Kellermans 3rd Alex Delaware novel. Alex gets a phone call from a former patient. He drives through the night to save his life and winds up in a morass of murder involving one of Californias leading families. A page turner you won't want to put down.
I love mystery and suspense so this one is great. The characters are different than the traditional a detective and a psycologist. My only suggestion would be to read them in order because their personal lives evolves in each book
Excellant
One of Kellerman's best. Very compelling, and I actually cared about the conflict.

Good book.
Great Book as are all of the books in this series so far.
Another great Alex Delaware book.
"if you have a weak stomach, enter Alex's world carefully, but do enter." i just love this honest quote.
one of his better psychological mysteries with his former patient accused of serial murder
This book is not damaged, but well read. the spine has creases.
