Magellan's circumnavigation is a fascinating story, and that is the main thing that saves Bergreen's book. The characters, their travels, and their times are so interesting and unusual that Bergreen has little to do. I am glad that I read this book, and it is one of the better ones on the subject, but Bergreen is in no way up to par with authors like Nathaniel Philbrick for maritime history.

For the arm-chair sailor, this book is IT! And it's all factual, with nothing made up.

An excellent read providing a good understanding of the trials of both Magellan and his crews voyage and the tremendous accomplishment that this armada ultimately achieved.

Very, very interesting to read. I also like that although nonfiction, it reads more like a good fiction story. I picked it up by chance and was glad that I did. Absolutely fascinating in its detail and really makes you think about the hardships and reality of some of those individuals like Magellan. I give it a 10!

Really and truly, I rate this book 4.5. It was a great read, read like a fine novel, seemed very carefully researched, and was hard to put down.

A fascinating story. Bergreen did an excellent job of research to bring to life such an old story. It was informative as well as entertaining.
