A body has been found on the overlook near Mulholland Drive. The victim, identified as Dr. Stanley Kent, has two bullet holes in the back of his head from what looks like an execution-style shooting. LAPD detective Harry Bosch is called out to investigate. It is the case he has been waiting for, his first since being recruited to the city's Homicide Special squad.
As soon as Bosch begins retracing Dr. Kent's steps, contradictions emerge. While Kent doesn't seem to have had ties to organized crime, he did have access to dangerous radioactive substances from just about every hospital in Los Angeles County. What begins as a routine homicide investigation opens up before Bosch into something much larger, more dangerous - and much more urgent.
Breaking in a new rookie partner and chasing his first fresh case in years, Bosch is soon in conflict not just with the LAPD brass but also with FBI hotshots who are convinced that the case is too important for the likes of the LAPD. Harry's onetime lover Rachel Walling is among the federal agents frantically working the case, making Bosch's job all the more complicated. Guarding one slim advantage, he relentlessly follows his own instincts, hoping they are still true enough to solve the crime - and to save all of Los Angeles from a deadly hazard.

Another Connelly winner! Harry Bosch at his best solving a murder with a rookie partner and an FBI agent that was once his lover. Keeps you turning pages. Can they save Los Angeles from a deadly hazard? Great book!

Another great one from Connelly, although it was kind of short and I felt some of the characters and relationships could have been more developed. The topic is timely and raises some interesting post-9/11 questions.
Once again, Michael Connelly has amazed me with how suspenseful he can make a book and how well he does at keeping us in the dark as to who did it until the end. I started reading the book when it was a serial in the NY Times. But this had more to it. And don't forget the special extra chapter 23 ... only available from his website, www.michaelconnelly.com. You won't be disappointed!

"The Overlook" is a short, fast moving book involving execution-style murder, the theft of cesium, and allegedly terrorism. Of course the best thing about this latest in the Harry Bosch series is Harry Bosch. He's older but still no-nonsense, persevering, thorough, and courageous. His dicey relationship with higher-ups in the LAPD and FBI is still present.
For those of you who have read all of the Bosch books, the deeper, more introspective Harry is missing. Though he meets ex-flame FBI agent Rachel Walling on the case, the hesitant romancing of Harry is missing here. He is still a jazz aficionado and knows the streets of LA like the back of his hand. This book will have to do until Connelly lets the reader catch up on Harry's life outside of the crime world.

As usual, Michael Connelly puts out another winner. A quick read which I read in one sitting. Great plot twist that is characteristic of his writing...you know it's coming just not when, where or how. Well worth the read as are all of his books.
Quick, suspensful, intense read!
This one ended up being surprisingly good. Ole' Harry Bosch just doesn't seem like that bright a guy, but he's sharper than he looks. There's some Feds who look typically inept and stupid, as they're usually portrayed. Bit of a stretch on some of the finer points, but it'll entertain you, for sure.
A quick Harry Bosch novel that has many of the plot twists and character scenarios that Michael Connelly fans expect and enjoy. Hard to put down once you dig in!
I loved the book. Michael Connelly is one of my favorite authors and Harry Bosh is one of my favorite personalities. The book was fast paced and well written.
Another great Harry Bosch novel. Shorter than most of the others; left me wanting more. Surprising plot twists.
Harry Bosch is called out on his first case since being recruited to the Homicide Special Squad. The body of Dr. Stanley Kent has been found on the Overlook near Mulholland Drive. He was killed execution style. Harry and his new partner Ignacio Ferras are just starting to put the pieces of the murder together when FBI Agent Rachel Walling shows up. She wants information about the murder, but doesn't want to give up anything in return. As Harry fights to keep jurisdiction over the murder, he discovers this routine investigation has spiraled into an incident that may cost hundreds of lives.
This is a fast paced story and a good installment in the Harry Bosch series. My rating: 4 Stars.

A great suspense novel with a surprise twist on the end! Whodonit? You'll have to read to find out (and you won't believe it till you see it!)
Another great Harry Bosch mystery with a very surprising ending!! loved it!!
Another Connelly WINNER! A page turner and very current in subject. Harry is of course his usual charming, whitty self. Great characters and lots of surprises! A+
What can I say it's Harry Bosch. I love him. Have even hooked my Hubby on him. Everyone needs to read them all.
Plot is good, writing is engaging, slightly predictable, fueding between law jurisdictions.Good read.
I love all of the Harry Bosch series. I am at book 15 now.
Another outstanding Michael Connelly read...a bit shorter than usual, but
Harry Bosch is in his usual good form!
Loved it.

I did not like this book as much as the others in the Harry Bosch series. It did not have the depth of plot or character development as his previous novels; it was very short. Maybe I was looking forward to reading it too much.
Average. Connelly seems to be running out of ideas - this is more contrived, less ingenious, and more overplayed than most of his novels which still makes it a perfectly fine read by mystery standards.

Near Mulholland Drive, Dr Stanley Kent is found shot twice in the back of the head. It's the case LAPD detective Harry Bosch has been waiting for, his first since being recruited to the Homicide Spdical Squad. When he descovers that Kent had access to dangerous radioactive substances, what begins as a routine investigation becomes something darker, more deadly, and frighteningly urgent. Bosch is soon in conflict with not only his superiors but the FBI, which thinks the case is too important for just a cop. Complicating his job even more is the presence of Agent Rachel Walling, his onetime lover. Now guarding one slim advantage, Bosch relentlessly follows his own instincts, hoping they are still sharp enough to find the truth--and a killer who can annihilate an entire city. Special Bonus-- Q & A with Michael Connelly and Discussion Questions
Each one gets better in this series....Harry has grown so much as a person...love it!
Good story with Harry Bosch. Works with FBI agent in previous book to find radioactive materials involved in a murder Harry is trying to solve.
